The research team collected 36 dental calculus samples from six individuals buried at the archaeological site. Using advanced chemical analysis, they searched for compounds known to be associated with betel nut consumption.
To verify their findings, the scientists also recreated a traditional betel preparation using dried areca nut, betel leaves, limestone paste and saliva. This allowed them to identify the distinctive chemical signature left behind after chewing.
When they compared the laboratory sample with the ancient dental calculus, they found matching compounds in one of the prehistoric individuals.

Study co-author Piyawit Moonkham, an anthropological archaeologist at Chiang Mai University, has said that while betel chewing carries well-documented health risks today, understanding its long history helps place the practice within its broader cultural and historical context rather than viewing it only through the lens of modern medicine.
Although the research explores an ancient tradition, it does not change the current medical understanding of betel nut consumption.
Modern health authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), classify areca nut as a carcinogen because long-term use is strongly associated with oral cancer and other serious diseases.
