Kylian Mbappe injury update: France captain, Real Madrid superstar suffers hyperextension of his left knee, La Liga giant announces comeback timeline

France captain Kylian Mbappe suffered a hyperextension of his left knee playing for France, his club Real Madrid said Saturday but could be ready to play again when La Liga resumes. The forward left the pitch shortly after opening the scoring in a 1-0 French win against Turkey on Friday.

New France coach Zinedine Zidane said France were "not going to take any risks" and that he would not use Mbappe in the three Nations League matches scheduled over the next 10 days.

France travel to Belgium on Monday before hosting Italy and Belgium at the Stade de France on October 2 and 5.


Real Madrid's first game after the international break, with Villarreal on October 10, might be too soon for an Mbappe return but Spanish daily AS reported Saturday he would ceratinly be ready for the Classico with Barcelona October 25.

"Following tests carried out today by Real Madrid's medical department on our player Kylian Mbappe, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee," the Spanish club said in a statement.

The France captain has left the national team, having been forced to come off shortly after scoring the winner in Friday's 1-0 Nations League victory over Turkey.

The 27-year-old was treated after the goal and briefly returned to the pitch but went down again moments later and was unable to continue, prompting France coach Zinedine Zidane to replace him in the 58th minute of his first game in charge.

"After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by Real Madrid's Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee," read the statement.

The French Football Federation initially said Mbappe was suffering from a "knee tendon injury" and had returned to Madrid for further assessment.

Real next host Villarreal in LaLiga on October 10.
