A mysterious flying object was seen hovering over the skies of Tehran and Mashhad on Sunday, September 20, 2026 sparking fresh online speculation and theories, according to Iranian media. The clips quickly gained traction across a city already on edge. Ever since Washington and Israeli strikes started on February 28, Tehran’s airspace has remained an active zone, with drones buzzing overhead every single night for the past seven months. The footage triggered widespread alarm that the US might be quietly deploying advanced military technology in their skies.

According to German news outlet bne IntelliNews, no Iranian official has commented on the objects, their altitude or their flight path, and none of the viral videos have been independently verified.




According to the outlet, one video was attributed to the Azadegan expressway. The video clips show a cluster of coloured lights that apparently moved or shifted position, with at least two different objects captured on video. Commenting on one of the video clips, a user cited religious phrases saying then adds "It's a UFO" in Persian, bne IntelliNews reported, citing the audio.





The quality and the angle of the footage reportedly do not allow the size, altitude, distance, or speed to be established. The other video, which is believed to be from Mashhad, shows a different type of UAP, over the large eastern city near the border of Turkmenistan.

Several users on Iranian social media have suggested that the mysterious object seems toi be a drone, a formation of drones, an aircraft or a kite. A user said that the Mashhad video showed an ordinary airliner, identifiable by the green and red wingtip lights that indicate an aircraft's direction of travel.

When one user submitted the video to an AI detection tool, the analysis suggested it was likely real, noting that the item looked like a lit-up drone, though the low quality prevented a definitive answer. According to local media, the video could still be AI-generated, and that possibility cannot be ruled out without exact timestamps, coordinates, or radar tracking.
