American singer and guitarist Willie Nelson and his wife, Annie, asked Texas farmers Tina and Orion Weldon in 2020 to transform their 500-acre Luck Ranch into a regenerative farm, according to Modern Farmer.

The initial work included introducing pigs to the pasture and spreading a native plant seed mix. A May 2026 profile by Farmer’s Footprint documents further regeneration work by the Weldons at Luck Ranch.

How Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch Started Its Regenerative Agriculture Project

Modern Farmer reported in July 2020 that Annie Nelson approached Tina and Orion Weldon at a farmers market in Spicewood, Texas, in April 2020 and asked them to transform the property.


The Weldons began the initial steps in May. They introduced pigs to the pasture to help the soil with their nutrient-dense manure and began spreading a native plant seed mix.

The Weldons also planned to later add chickens and light grazers such as sheep and cattle. Modern Farmer reported that Willie Nelson and his family were involved in the process, including feeding and rotating the pigs and sowing and spreading seeds.

The Ranch Had a Broader Regenerative Agriculture Plan

WholeFoods Magazine reported in July 2020 that TerraPurezza had partnered with Luck Ranch to create a comprehensive, replicable example of regenerative agriculture.

According to the publication, the 500-acre ranch was to be transformed into a regenerative agriculture farm by restoring native prairie, recharging aquifers and improving soil quality with heritage-breed livestock.

The plans also included rotational grazing of high-density livestock, water management, restoration of native grasses and maintaining animal welfare, according to WholeFoods Magazine.

The publication reported that the partnership began implementing regenerative agricultural practices on the property in June 2020, with the goal of having a fully functional operation by fall 2021.

Luck Ranch Was Home to More Than 70 Rescued Horses in 2020

Luck Ranch was also home to rescued horses. WholeFoods Magazine reported in July 2020 that the ranch was home to more than 70 rescued horses.

That figure comes from the 2020 report and does not establish the number of horses at Luck Ranch in 2026.

Rotational Grazing Was Part of the Regenerative Agriculture Plans

Rotational grazing was among the practices described in the 2020 plans for Luck Ranch.

WholeFoods Magazine reported that TerraPurezza planned to use rotational grazing of high-density livestock along with water management, native-grass restoration and soil regeneration.

Micah Nelson also later described regenerative agriculture at Luck Ranch. In an interview with City Lifestyle, he said the family was working with a local regenerative farm and mentioned rotational grazing and planting native crops.

A Farmer’s Footprint profile published May 1, 2026, describes Luck Ranch as the 500-acre ranch of Willie and Annie Nelson and documents the Weldons’ work to regenerate the property.

The profile says heritage-breed pigs at Luck Ranch are used to break the hard surface of the soil, improve soil permeability, encourage the regrowth of natural vegetation and make way for native grassland seeds.

Farmer’s Footprint describes the state of Luck Ranch as “just the beginning” and says the project has an unknown potential end result.
