Boston, Massachusetts, New England are bracing for coastal flood warning, nor’easter rains and winds, according to the latest weather forecast. There will be strong wind, heavy rains and floods predicted especially for areas in Boston. The maximum impact of the inclement weather will be felt on southeastern parts and coastal areas for Massachusetts throughout the weekend.

An early-season Nor'Easter will rapidly intensify and bring major coastal flooding impacts to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Coasts through this weekend. Those in coastal New Enlgand can also expect strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall, National Weather Service reported.

Coastal Flooding, Weather Updates


The combination of persistent, strong onshore winds, high surf, and high astronomical tides will result in moderate to major coastal flooding impacts, especially at high tide, through this weekend. Coastal residents are urged to heed their local National Weather Service forecasts and warnings and follow guidance from local officials.

High surf is expected on many beaches, which will generate strong rip currents, beach erosion and likely property damage.

The storm will bring wind gusts in excess of 45 MPH and potential for scattered power outages for the Mid-Atlantic coast into Friday before the wind and heavy rain threat shifts to New England for this weekend. Heavy rain may lead to inland flooding in southern New England Friday to Sunday.

MLB Season to Be Impacted?

The major storm heading toward New England this weekend is expected to force the Chicago Cubs and Boston ​Red Sox into an early end to the regular ‌season. The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that ​MLB does not plan to move the series ​to an alternate location despite a storm that will ⁠include heavy rain and wind in a regional event ​commonly known as a nor'easter. With the worst of the ​weather expected to begin Saturday night, multiple outlets have reported that a Friday doubleheader is being planned, with a single game on Saturday ​that would end the regular season for both clubs.

Hurricane Polo

Meanwhile, a powerful Hurricane Polo sent bands of heavy rain across Mexico’s Pacific coast Thursday as a growing Tropical Storm Nolo approached Hawaii with the potential for catastrophic flooding.

Polo was forecast to maintain Category 5 strength as it skirts Mexico’s coast over the next few days. Rain and strong winds had already started to pummel the coast, with waves crashing onto the normally pristine beaches.

While the eye and the strongest winds were expected to remain at sea, the heavy rains could cause life-threatening flooding and landslides, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Farther west in the Pacific, Tropical Storm Nolo was churning about 295 miles (475 kilometers) south of South Point, Hawaii. It was forecast to become a hurricane by Thursday night and was expected to approach the Big Island as early as Friday. A hurricane watch was issued for Hawaii County.

Governor Josh Green’s office said public schools and state and county offices on the Big Island will close Thursday and Friday, while Maui County will shutter them on Friday ahead of the threat of heavy rain, winds and flooding. Forecasters said the storm could drop up to 20 inches (51 centimeters) of rain.
