What is Parkinson's disease?

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement.

The condition develops when nerve cells in a part of the brain gradually stop producing enough dopamine, a chemical messenger responsible for coordinating smooth muscle movements.

As dopamine levels decline, people may experience problems with movement, balance and coordination. The disease progresses gradually, although symptoms and the rate of progression vary from person to person.

What are the early symptoms of Parkinson's disease?

Symptoms often begin slowly and may initially affect only one side of the body. Common symptoms include:

  • Tremors or shaking, especially in the hands
  • Slowed movement (bradykinesia)
  • Muscle stiffness or rigidity
  • Difficulty walking
  • Poor balance
  • Smaller handwriting
  • Soft or slurred speech
  • Reduced facial expressions
  • Trouble with coordination

Many people also develop non-motor symptoms, including:

  • Loss of smell
  • Constipation
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Fatigue
  • Memory and thinking problems in later stages

What symptoms did Carly Simon experience?

According to Simon, her health issues first began with arthritis that affected her knees and hip. She underwent three joint replacement surgeries before noticing additional movement problems.

Doctors later evaluated her at the Mayo Clinic, where she received a Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

She also revealed that she had surgery to remove basal cell carcinoma, which contributed to her absence from public appearances.

Is there a cure for Parkinson's disease?

No. There is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease.

However, modern treatments can significantly improve symptoms and help many people maintain a good quality of life for years.

Treatment plans are individualized and may include:

Medications

Doctors commonly prescribe medications that increase or replace dopamine in the brain, helping reduce symptoms such as stiffness, tremors and slowed movement.

Exercise

Regular physical activity is considered one of the most effective ways to improve mobility, balance and overall function.

Physical therapy

Therapy can help improve posture, flexibility, walking and strength.

Speech therapy

Some patients benefit from speech therapy if Parkinson's affects their voice or swallowing.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

For certain people with advanced Parkinson's disease whose symptoms are not well controlled with medication, doctors may recommend deep brain stimulation, a surgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes to regulate abnormal brain activity.

Can people live a normal life with Parkinson's?

Although Parkinson's disease is progressive, many people continue working, traveling and enjoying active lives for years after diagnosis with proper treatment, exercise and ongoing medical care.

Carly Simon echoed that message in her statement, saying she has continued making music despite the challenges.

"I have not stopped living and I have not stopped working."
