GTA 6 online multiplayer to launch in 2027? Twitch CEO Dan Clancy expects that Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 would capture much of the gaming world's attention when it launches on November 19, according to Times of India report. Dan Clancy believes the game's influence could continue well beyond the holiday season and into next year. Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show, Clancy said Rockstar Games' highly anticipated title is likely to attract a huge audience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. He also suggested that some other game publishers could avoid releasing major titles around GTA 6's launch to prevent competing for players' attention. Clancy is also expecting a huge surge in interest when Rockstar eventually launches the game's online multiplayer experience in 2027. The multiplayer mode could give GTA 6 another major boost among players, streamers and content creators.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Clancy said, “We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators. You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

GTA 6 could take over gaming attention

Clancy said he expects GTA 6 to have limited competition for players' attention during the holiday season. He said some publishers are planning to release major games in October, while others may wait until the attention surrounding GTA 6 starts to ease. However, Clancy believes the game's popularity could remain high through January and potentially longer as Rockstar expands its multiplayer plans. For Twitch, the GTA 6 release could become a major viewing event. Clancy, who has been the company's CEO for seven years, said he has not witnessed a similar level of anticipation for a game during his tenure. He expects GTA 6 to bring back viewers who may have stopped using Twitch regularly, potentially giving the platform's overall viewership a significant boost. "It absolutely will spike the overall viewership meaningfully. How much, I have no idea,” Clancy said.

GTA 6 multiplayer could create another surge

Rockstar has not yet revealed when GTA 6's online multiplayer mode will launch. However, Clancy's comments indicate that he expects the multiplayer experience to arrive sometime in 2027. That could give GTA 6 another opportunity to attract players and content creators and extend the game's popularity. GTA V has remained a major presence on Twitch, largely because of the popularity of role-playing servers. Creators play characters including police officers, criminals and judges while creating their own stories inside the game. Clancy called this style of content a form of "improvisational performance art." The GTA role-playing community has also attracted viewers who may not play the game themselves, helping Rockstar keep interest in GTA V alive years after its original release.

Why Twitch believes its community matters

Clancy also highlighted Twitch's focus on long-form interaction between creators and viewers. Unlike platforms such as TikTok and YouTube, where users often move quickly between individual pieces of content, Twitch encourages viewers to spend extended periods watching creators and interacting with other members of their communities. According to Clancy, that model could become increasingly important as social media feeds grow and AI-generated content becomes more widespread. While he believes AI could help Twitch creators find new ways to entertain audiences, Clancy does not expect AI-powered streamers to replace human creators.

He said AI streamers will remain "the exception," arguing that part of Twitch's appeal comes from the relationships viewers build with creators and other members of the community. "We’re programmed to feel a sense of belonging and connection with other people,” Clancy said.
