Coastal flood warning in US: Millions of Americans across the Northeast are gearing up for an intense, multiday nor’easter this weekend which is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts to the East Coast. There is a growing coastal flood threat from the Mid-Atlantic to New England with the storm expected to remain a long-duration system through the weekend.

According to NBC news, a coastal flood warning is in place from the North Carolina coast to New Jersey and Connecticut on Thursday evening. Boston has been warned of peak impacts from the storm Friday evening into Saturday. Parts of Maryland and Virginia are already under coastal flood alerts, while coastal areas of New Jersey, New York and New England are also preparing for the storm's strongest impacts, according to multiple media reports. Areas from Alexandria to Annapolis, as well as other coastal communities, reported that flooding has become more frequent and more severe over the years.

Coastal flood warning: Alexandria, Annapolis face rising water

Areas like Maryland and Virginia are already the coastal flood threat as the nor’easter approaches in the United States. FOX 5 reported that areas from Alexandria to Annapolis are preparing for coastal flooding, with low-lying parts of Anne Arundel County already seeing water creep in. Heavy showers combined with strong winds of 10–20 mph is expected to push water to moderate flood stage around high tide.

In Anne Arundel County, the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning alert through Friday morning and has warned of flooding in low-lying areas too. In Annapolis, water can approach businesses on Dock Street, while the City Dock parking lot and Compromise Street can flood when water levels rise. The situation is similar in Alexandria with Fox 5 reporting that shoreline and flood-prone areas could see up to a half-foot of water above ground level. There are chances that water could approach the curb near King Street and Strand Street and potentially reach buildings near King and Union Street.

Residents and officials along the Jersey Shore are preparing for a powerful nor'easter expected to bring strong winds, rain, coastal flooding and beach erosion through the weekend. ABC7 New York reported that Ocean City has seen waves hitting the shoreline and washing away sand ahead of the storm, raising concerns about significant beach erosion.

The high storm is likely to bring strong gusty winds with 40 mph speed on Friday and stronger impacts will develop through the weekend. In Sea Bright, the mayor informed that the officials are taking all necessary precautions, but the borough is surrounded by water, meaning strong winds, rain and the tides could cause problems, especially as water builds up in the back bay and Shrewsbury River.

Atlantic City Fire Department's Scott Evans said, "You don't want your vehicle driving through that much water at all. This is not a puddle. Your low lying vehicles will quickly become disabled and damaged, and you know we don't want to see equipment and people get hurt."

Rare September nor’easter could keep flooding threat alive through weekend

Unlike a short-lived storm, the nor'easter is expected to be a long-duration event, with strong winds, rain, coastal flooding and beach erosion continuing through the weekend and into Monday. Reports suggest that the Tri-State region is also preparing for heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding and beach erosion from Friday into Monday. The strongest impacts are expected from Saturday into early Sunday. There are also high surf advisories for Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island and the Jersey Shore through Saturday.

New York City is also gearing up for high-tide flooding in coastal neighbourhoods. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is urging residents to take steps now to prepare, including moving cars to higher grounds, securing outdoor furniture, clearing debris from drains, keeping batteries charged, and signing up for Notify NYC.
