According to Severe Weather Europe website, a rapidly strengthening El Niño is increasingly influencing large-scale weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere, and long-range models suggest it could eventually reach the extreme category popularly known as a “Super El Niño”.
The tropical Pacific has been warming rapidly following the breakdown of the previous La Niña pattern.
What makes the current development particularly significant is not simply the ocean temperatures, but what is now happening above them: the atmosphere is beginning to respond.
Forecast analysis from Severe Weather Europe shows an increasingly organised El Niño circulation, with the changing Pacific pattern influencing pressure systems and the jet stream across North America and Europe.
And the weather expected through August could provide some of the clearest evidence yet that the transition is gaining strength.
Western US heat reflects a changing pressure pattern
Across North America, the early-August forecast shows a strong ridge of high pressure over western and west-central parts of the continent.Such ridges encourage sinking air, which suppresses clouds and allows temperatures to climb — the atmospheric setup often associated with prolonged summer heat and, when sufficiently persistent and intense, heat-dome conditions.
Above-normal temperatures are expected across parts of the western and central United States during the opening portion of August.
But the heat is only one side of the emerging pattern.
Farther east, lower pressure is forecast to become increasingly important. As August progresses, this could help draw cooler air southward into parts of the Midwest and eastern United States.
The result is an increasingly divided US weather map: greater heat concentrated farther west and south-central, with relatively cooler conditions becoming possible farther east.
That eastward evolution of the pressure pattern is particularly important because it resembles atmospheric tendencies associated with rapidly developing El Niño events.
A cooler change could emerge farther east
The pattern is forecast to evolve further around the middle of August.Ensemble guidance indicates lower pressure becoming established around eastern North America, including parts of eastern Canada, while higher pressure remains stronger farther west.
That configuration could allow cooler northern air to push into the Midwest and eastern US, bringing temperatures closer to or even below seasonal averages in some areas.
Western and south-central parts of the United States, meanwhile, are more likely to remain on the warmer side.
Individual long-range model runs have shown even stronger cool anomalies spreading across parts of the central and eastern US around mid-August, although forecasts at that range can change substantially.
Rainfall could become equally divided.
Wetter conditions are indicated for parts of the Northeast and western US during portions of August, while drier-than-normal weather is possible across areas including the south-central US and Pacific Northwest.
Europe’s high-pressure zone is also moving
Across the Atlantic, another significant atmospheric adjustment is appearing.Early August is expected to bring above-normal temperatures to parts of central, southern and southeastern Europe, accompanied by generally drier conditions in many of those areas.
But the location of the dominant high-pressure system is forecast to change as the month progresses.
Instead of remaining anchored over the same areas, the ridge is expected to shift eastward. That would gradually allow western and parts of central Europe to move closer to average temperatures while keeping the strongest warmth farther east.
Northern Europe could remain under a cooler influence.
While El Niño does not dictate European weather as directly as it influences North America, changes in the tropical Pacific can affect planetary-scale atmospheric waves and ultimately alter pressure patterns thousands of miles away.
The simultaneous changes appearing across North America and Europe are therefore being closely watched.
The real story is unfolding over the Pacific
At the centre of all these changes is a vast area of unusually warm water stretching across the tropical Pacific.El Niño occurs when sea-surface temperatures across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific become warmer than normal and the atmosphere responds to that warming.
The current event developed rapidly after the previous La Niña weakened, aided by a large subsurface pulse of warm water moving across the Pacific.
As that warmth reached the surface, the tropical atmosphere began reorganising.
Forecast data show rising air becoming concentrated over the central and eastern tropical Pacific while sinking air becomes more prominent farther west.
That matters because tropical thunderstorms and rising air act as a powerful source of energy for the global atmosphere.
Changes there can send large atmospheric waves into the mid-latitudes, shifting the jet stream and influencing where persistent areas of high and low pressure develop.
Why forecasters are talking about a ‘Super El Niño’
Not every El Niño becomes a Super El Niño.The term is generally used informally for exceptionally strong events in which tropical Pacific temperature anomalies reach extreme levels. Past powerful episodes include 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16.
Forecast models have been indicating that the developing 2026 event could become exceptionally strong later this year, potentially reaching levels associated with that rare category.
Earlier seasonal modelling had already suggested El Niño would strengthen substantially during the second half of 2026. The latest atmospheric developments are significant because the expected influence is now becoming visible in summer weather patterns.
That does not mean every heatwave, storm or temperature drop during August can be attributed directly to El Niño. Day-to-day weather remains influenced by numerous atmospheric factors.
Instead, forecasters look at the larger pattern — the positioning of pressure systems, the jet stream, tropical convection and persistent temperature and rainfall anomalies.
It is that broader picture that is increasingly drawing attention.
August may be a preview of what comes next
The developing El Niño becomes considerably more important once summer ends.El Niño events typically exert their strongest influence on Northern Hemisphere weather during fall and winter, when the Pacific jet stream becomes more responsive to tropical ocean conditions.
Seasonal forecasts already indicate a more recognisable El Niño pattern developing across North America during fall.
Higher pressure is favoured farther north towards Canada, while a more active belt of lower pressure and storms could develop across the southern United States.
That would increase the chances of above-normal rainfall across significant portions of the country, particularly southern areas.
Much of Canada and the northern US currently lean warmer than normal in seasonal guidance, while the southern states could see temperatures held closer to average by increased cloud, precipitation and storm activity.
Super El Niño could reshape the US winter
The larger consequences could emerge during winter 2026-27 if the El Niño strengthens as currently projected.A powerful El Niño typically strengthens and redirects the Pacific jet stream, often creating a more active storm corridor across the southern United States.
Early winter forecasts show signs of such a split pattern, with higher pressure farther north and stronger storm activity potentially running across southern portions of the country.
That could favour wetter conditions across the southern US while reducing snowfall opportunities across some northern regions.
Longer-range guidance also shows the possibility of colder conditions spreading into parts of the central, southern and eastern US later in winter, particularly towards February.
But those details remain highly uncertain months in advance. El Niño can tilt the odds towards certain seasonal patterns; it cannot determine the timing or location of individual winter storms.
An ocean warming thousands of miles away is starting to matter
For now, the significance of August lies less in any single heatwave or cool spell and more in the way the broader atmospheric pattern is coming together.High pressure and persistent warmth across the western US, a developing lower-pressure influence farther east and the repositioning of Europe’s dominant pressure systems are appearing as the tropical Pacific undergoes one of its most consequential shifts in years.
Forecasts still need to verify just how powerful the developing El Niño ultimately becomes.
But if current projections hold, the weather changes emerging in early August may be only the first visible signs of a much larger global atmospheric rearrangement — one that could become considerably more pronounced as fall gives way to winter.
