Trump announces pause in Iran attack after Tehran reportedly seeks talks, links move to Hormuz reopening

US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced agreement to hold off a planned military attack on Iran after Tehran, along with other Middle Eastern countries, requested a pause, claiming that the broad parameters of a potential pact had been reached.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States was "locked and loaded" and prepared to launch military action against Iran "at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II."

He added that Iran and other countries in the region had urged Washington to delay the attack as negotiations gained momentum.


"This would include the immediate, complete, and total opening of the Hormuz Strait, and an end to Iran's nuclear threat," Trump wrote, outlining what he said were the key elements of the proposed agreement. "Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the world and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a deal," he added.

The US President also said Israel had joined the United States in supporting the pause in military action while diplomatic efforts continue.

"The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment. Get to work, everybody, and get it done," he wrote.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following months of military strikes, including disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and repeated threats of further escalation.

Saudi Arabia pushes for restraint

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged US President Donald Trump not to escalate the conflict with Iran during a phone call on Saturday, amid reports that Washington is weighing fresh military strikes against Tehran.

According to the Associated Press, citing a person familiar with the discussion, the Saudi leadership is concerned that any US attack on Iran's energy infrastructure or other key strategic assets could trigger retaliatory strikes by Tehran against energy facilities in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.

During the call, the crown prince also sought clarity on the military options under consideration by the Trump administration. A White House official confirmed that the two leaders spoke on Saturday but declined to comment on the substance of the conversation.

Riyadh steps up diplomatic outreach

The call comes as Saudi Arabia intensifies efforts to prevent a wider regional conflict despite joining the US earlier this week in strikes on logistics and weapons sites used by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.

The kingdom has continued to advocate a diplomatic solution, urging Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations. As part of that effort, Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman travelled to Washington this week for separate meetings with Trump and Vice President JD Vance to discuss Iran strategy.

US weighs next move

Trump had vowed to retaliate after Iran launched a missile attack on a US military base in Jordan earlier this week, although the strike was intercepted. Earlier, he said the US would hit Iran "very hard" until it could no longer continue its attacks.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also accused Tehran of violating last month's truce memorandum by targeting commercial shipping and killing American soldiers.

On Saturday, the US State Department issued fresh security alerts for Americans across 10 Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Iraq and Israel, warning of possible flight disruptions, airspace closures and heightened regional tensions as the crisis continues to unfold.
