Video shows Santa Cruz lifeguard battling massive waves

According to Vander Dussen, the rescue began even before his recording started. "I've never seen a rescue this intense before. So when I saw that unfolding, I just didn't know how it was going to turn out."



He said the first lifeguard did not hesitate, running straight into the crashing surf to reach the struggling boy. "That just missed the opening seconds where the first lifeguard just fearlessly ran out into those huge waves and did what was needed to bring help to that boy."

The footage shows the lifeguard staying with the swimmer despite relentless waves, refusing to let go as both were repeatedly hit by heavy surf.

Bystanders tried to help but the surf was too powerful

Several people on the beach attempted to assist during the rescue, but the force of the waves quickly knocked them off their feet. Marine Safety Officer Anaiis Moise said that while the desire to help is understandable, entering dangerous water without training can make the situation even worse.

"I understand the instinct to want to go and help someone. And often the more effective way to help is going to be getting someone who is trained and professional to respond to that."

A second lifeguard later entered the water, and together the team successfully brought the young swimmer back to shore safely.

The dramatic rescue comes during a period of unusually strong surf along the Santa Cruz coast. In a statement, California State Parks lifeguards said: "We have made 34 rescues for beach visitors that misjudged the danger these waves present. Conditions change rapidly, and what seems normal is potentially deadly."

Officials said lifeguards have rescued 34 people across Santa Cruz County since the weekend began, highlighting how quickly beach conditions have deteriorated.

Vander Dussen said he decided to share the footage not for its dramatic images, but to remind people to respect the ocean.

"My heart for sharing the video was to bring a cautionary tale to people coming out to the beach. We want to see people come out, have a good time, enjoy the weather, but get home safely."

For longtime Santa Cruz residents, rescues like this are a reminder that even experienced swimmers can underestimate the Pacific Ocean.

Karen Crivelli, who lives in Santa Cruz County, said beach safety depends on following the rules and staying aware of changing conditions.

"People ignore, and there's rescues every day in this area. So the beaches are safe as long as you don't turn your back to the water and you obey the rules."
