The September 23 payment is for Social Security beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st of the month.

Millions of Americans are set to receive another round of Social Security payments this week, with the next scheduled payment arriving Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The payment is part of the Social Security Administration's regular September schedule and is intended for beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 21st and the last day of the month.

The biggest figure attached to this week's Social Security payments is $5,181 a month, the maximum retirement benefit available in 2026 for someone who meets a very specific set of requirements. But that amount is far higher than what most retirees receive.

Who gets a Social Security payment on September 23?

The September 23 payment is for Social Security beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st of the month. The SSA generally spreads retirement and Social Security Disability Insurance payments across three Wednesdays:

  • September 9: Birthdays from the 1st through 10th
  • September 16: Birthdays from the 11th through 20th
  • September 23: Birthdays from the 21st through 31st
The SSA's official 2026 payment calendar confirms September 23 as the final Wednesday payment date for this month's regular birth-date schedule.

Why some Social Security recipients get paid on different dates

People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 generally receive their Social Security payment on the third day of the month. People who receive both SSI and Social Security also follow a different schedule.

September's SSI payment was issued on September 1, while certain Social Security beneficiaries outside the regular Wednesday schedule received their payment on September 3.

SSI is also a separate program from Social Security retirement benefits and is based on financial need rather than a worker's lifetime earnings.

Could your Social Security check be $5,181?

The answer for most retirees is no. $5,181 is the maximum monthly Social Security retirement benefit for someone claiming at age 70 in 2026. Reaching that amount requires a worker to have earned at or above the Social Security taxable maximum for roughly 35 years and delayed claiming benefits until age 70.

That makes the $5,181 figure a ceiling rather than a typical payment. For comparison, the maximum monthly benefit for someone claiming at full retirement age in 2026 is $4,152.

Most retirees receive much less than $5,181

The average Social Security retirement payment is considerably lower than the maximum. The estimated average monthly benefit for retired workers was about $2,071 in January 2026, following the year's 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment.

The amount a person actually receives depends on several factors, including their earnings history and the age at which they claim benefits.

The SSA calculates retirement benefits using a worker's highest 35 years of indexed earnings. Claiming before full retirement age can reduce the monthly benefit, while delaying retirement benefits beyond full retirement age can increase the payment up to age 70.

When will the next Social Security payments arrive?

September 23 is the final regular Wednesday payment date for September.

The next major Social Security payment cycle begins in October, although some beneficiaries will receive payments on different dates depending on their eligibility and whether they also receive SSI.

The payment schedule can also shift when a scheduled date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. In those cases, payments are generally issued earlier.

A payment that doesn't appear immediately does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your benefits. Beneficiaries can first check with their bank or financial institution to see whether the deposit is being processed. They can also log into their my Social Security account and verify that their direct-deposit information is correct.

If a payment remains missing, beneficiaries can contact the Social Security Administration for assistance.

The headline maximum can make it sound as though $5,181 is the amount retirees should expect this week. It isn't. The figure applies only to people who meet demanding earnings and claiming-age requirements. Most Social Security recipients receive substantially less.

For anyone trying to estimate their own retirement income, a personal benefit estimate based on their actual earnings record is more useful than comparing their expected payment with the program's maximum.
