According to ScienceDaily, researchers say the insects' unusually long and slender body parts closely resemble the fictional pirate's signature rubber-like abilities, making the name a fitting choice.
The discovery, published in the peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys, not only introduces two previously unknown beetle species but also offers fresh clues about the evolutionary history of an important group of rove beetles.
Why the beetle was named after Luffy
The scientists behind the discovery chose the name because the beetles possess remarkably elongated mandibles, antennae and maxillary palps compared with their close relatives.Those stretched body parts reminded researchers of Monkey D. Luffy's elastic limbs, a defining feature of the One Piece protagonist, whose powers allow him to extend and reshape parts of his body.
Rather than being a simple pop culture reference, the name reflects a distinctive physical characteristic that sets the new genus apart from other beetles.
Two new species join the Luffy genus
Researchers have so far identified two species within the newly established genus, the report notes.The first, Luffy schillhammeri, was discovered in broadleaf forests in China's Yunnan Province. It was named in honour of Dr. Harald Schillhammer of the Natural History Museum Vienna for his long-standing contributions to rove beetle research.
The second species, Luffy nika, was found in northern Laos. Its name references Luffy's famous Gear 5 transformation, also known as the awakening of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.
Discovery fills an evolutionary puzzle
The significance of the discovery extends well beyond its connection to one of the world's most popular manga series.By comparing numerous specimens and examining subtle anatomical features, the team identified characteristics shared among a branch known as the Eucibdelus lineage.
The newly described Luffy genus displays some of those defining traits while also possessing unique features absent in related groups. Based on that combination, the researchers concluded that Luffy likely represents the closest known relative—or sister group—to the entire Eucibdelus lineage.
ScienceDaily further reported that the finding helps bridge an important gap in scientists' understanding of how this branch of rove beetles evolved over time.
Science inspired by popular culture
The researchers say naming the beetles after Luffy also serves another purpose: making taxonomy more accessible to a wider audience.By connecting scientific discoveries with a globally recognised fictional character, they hope to spark greater public interest in biodiversity, species classification and evolutionary research.
The team believes memorable names can help inspire younger generations to explore natural history while highlighting that taxonomy remains an active field where new discoveries continue to reshape scientists' understanding of life on Earth.
