Samara Weaving is Marvel's new Emma Frost as ‘X-Men’ reboot begins taking shape

Marvel Studios has found its Emma Frost.

Samara Weaving has been cast as the powerful mutant in Marvel’s upcoming “X-Men” reboot, giving the “Ready or Not” star one of her biggest franchise roles yet as the studio begins assembling a new generation of mutants for the MCU.

Weaving will portray the telepathic Emma Frost, one of the most recognisable — and morally complicated — characters in X-Men history. The casting marks a significant step forward for Marvel’s long-awaited reboot, which will be directed by “Thunderbolts*” filmmaker Jake Schreier.


The news comes as Marvel accelerates its post-“Avengers: Secret Wars” plans and follows a major Comic-Con presentation that revealed Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider and David Jonsson as Prince T’Challa II, who will take on the Black Panther mantle in “Black Panther 3”.

For Weaving, Emma Frost represents a very different kind of role from the horror and dark comedy performances that have helped define her career.

Who is Emma Frost?

Anyone expecting a straightforward superhero may be in for a surprise.

Emma Frost has spent decades moving between villain, antihero and X-Men leader in Marvel Comics.

Introduced as the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, Frost initially appeared as an adversary of the X-Men. She later became closely associated with Charles Xavier’s mutant team and eventually emerged as one of its most prominent members.

Her primary ability is exceptionally powerful telepathy, putting her among Marvel’s notable psychic mutants.

Emma can read and influence minds, communicate telepathically and project her consciousness, among other abilities.

She also possesses a secondary mutation that allows her to transform her body into an organic diamond-like form, dramatically increasing her durability and physical strength.

That combination of power, intelligence and moral ambiguity has made Emma one of the more distinctive characters in the X-Men universe.

Samara Weaving steps into the MCU

The role adds another major franchise to Weaving’s increasingly varied résumé.

The Australian actor has become particularly well known to horror audiences through films including “Ready or Not” and “The Babysitter”.

She also appeared in “Scream VI”, “Bill & Ted Face the Music” and the Oscar-winning “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”.

More recently, Weaving appeared in “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” and “Over Your Dead Body”.

Emma Frost will now bring her into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at a crucial point in its evolution.

The MCU is preparing to move beyond its Multiverse Saga, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously confirming that the studio intends to recast the X-Men for the franchise’s next era following “Avengers: Secret Wars”.

Marvel’s X-Men will be ‘recognisably different’

The new film is being directed by Jake Schreier, who previously worked with Marvel on “Thunderbolts*”.

Schreier has already indicated that audiences should not expect Marvel Studios simply to recreate the X-Men franchise previously developed by 20th Century Fox.

He has said the new interpretation will be “recognisably different” and suggested that the film will explore the scale offered by the X-Men comics.

That gives Marvel an enormous catalogue of characters and storylines to draw from.

The studio acquired the screen rights to the X-Men when Disney completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, clearing the way for mutants to become fully integrated into the MCU.

Marvel has introduced mutant-related characters and concepts gradually since then, but the Schreier film will represent the studio’s major attempt to establish its own X-Men team.

Weaving’s Emma Frost is now one of the clearest pieces of that new lineup.

But the old X-Men aren’t finished yet

Before Marvel introduces its next generation of mutants, several stars from the Fox-era X-Men movies are returning.

“Avengers: Doomsday” brings veteran X-Men characters into Marvel’s wider multiverse story, with Patrick Stewart returning as Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto and James Marsden as Cyclops.

Other returning actors include Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer.

The first “Avengers: Doomsday” trailer has already shown the X-Men colliding with the wider MCU as Doctor Doom, played by returning Marvel star Robert Downey Jr., emerges as the central threat.

That makes Marvel’s strategy increasingly clear: give audiences another encounter with familiar X-Men before turning the page to a newly cast team.

Marvel is reshaping its post-‘Secret Wars’ future

Weaving’s casting also arrives during a broader reset at Marvel Studios.

At Comic-Con, Marvel confirmed Ryan Gosling will headline a standalone “Ghost Rider” movie directed by Shawn Levy, while “Black Panther 3” will feature David Jonsson as the grown-up Prince T’Challa II, the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa. Both movies are slated for 2028.

Marvel is also deliberately reducing the number of films it releases as it attempts to put greater emphasis on individual projects. Feige has described the strategy as one focused on quality after years of much heavier output.

The X-Men are expected to be central to that next chapter.

And casting Emma Frost is particularly intriguing because Marvel has chosen a character whose loyalties have rarely been simple.

Depending on which elements of her comic history the MCU adopts, Weaving could enter the franchise as an enemy of the X-Men, an uneasy ally, a full-fledged member of the team — or move between all three.

For now, Marvel has not revealed how Emma Frost fits into Schreier’s story.

But with Samara Weaving now attached to the role, the studio’s new mutant era is beginning to acquire a face.
