Google’s former chief scientist Jeff Dean, who spent 27 years at the tech giant, has revealed his intense weekly workout routine, which includes running, cycling, soccer, gym sessions and yoga. He also shared the simple habits he uses to protect h...

Dean was Google’s employee No. 30 and became one of the company’s most influential technical leaders during his 27-year career.

Jeff Dean may be best known for his decades of work at Google and his reputation as one of the company’s legendary engineers. But the former Google chief scientist has now offered a glimpse into another side of his life: his surprisingly intense weekly fitness routine.

Dean, who recently left Google after 27 years to lead AI startup Discovery Loop, shared details of his exercise schedule after posting a calendar from his final day at the company during the KDD Conference in Jeju, South Korea.

A user noticed yoga on the packed schedule and asked Dean about his usual workout routine. His response revealed a demanding mix of running, cycling, soccer, gym sessions and yoga.

Jeff Dean’s weekly workout routine

Dean said his regular fitness schedule includes:

  • Two soccer games in a 25-and-over league
  • Two gym sessions
  • Two yoga classes
  • Three to four 8-kilometre runs to work
  • Three to four 8-kilometre bike commutes
  • One longer run or cycling session on the weekend
The routine combines strength training, cardiovascular exercise, flexibility work and recreational sports, making Dean’s week considerably more active than a typical workout schedule.

Jeff Dean shares how he protects his knees and ankles

Given the amount of running and sport he does, one X user asked Dean how he manages to protect his joints.

Dean’s answer was surprisingly simple. “Squishy running shoes and replacing the shoes pretty often and arch support inserts,” he wrote.

The Google veteran also revealed that his ankles are actually more troublesome than his knees. “It's my ankles that are more troublesome (too many basketball sprains years ago),” Dean said.

His comments highlight the importance of footwear and support for people who regularly engage in high-impact activities. Replacing worn running shoes and using appropriate arch support may help runners maintain comfort, although individual needs can vary.

Jeff Dean’s fitness routine comes after 27 years at Google

Dean was Google’s employee No. 30 and became one of the company’s most influential technical leaders during his 27-year career.

He was also the subject of Chuck Norris-style jokes among Google engineers, a reflection of his almost mythical reputation within the company’s engineering culture.

Now, as he moves into his next chapter with Discovery Loop, Dean appears to be maintaining another long-standing habit: staying remarkably active.

For those looking for a sustainable fitness routine, his schedule offers a notable combination of running, cycling, strength training, yoga and team sports, rather than relying on just one form of exercise.
