As young kids, we often heard that success should arrive early- ideally before 30. But US billionaire media icon Oprah Winfrey has challenged this notion as she believes that the timeline is unrealistic, adding that your forties can be the most powerful chapter of your career

Speaking on the Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast, Winfrey shared a perspective that has resonated with professionals of all ages. According to Oprah Winfrey, real confidence, clarity, and purpose often arrive much later than people expect.

"Life starts at 44", says Oprah Winfrey

During the conversation, the 72-year-old billionaire explained that her mid-forties marked the moment she truly began living for herself. She stopped trying to satisfy everyone around her. For her, success is not about awards or financial wealth but about reaching a stage where people are comfortable with who they actually are.

“Life starts at 44,” Winfrey recently said on the Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast. “Because you come into yourself in a way that you’re no longer trying to please everybody else.”

Why Oprah Winfrey believes 44 changed everything

By the time Winfrey reached 44, she had already become one of the biggest names in television across the US and beyond. She had transformed The Oprah Winfrey Show into one of America's most influential daytime programs, collected multiple Emmy Awards, produced acclaimed projects, and built an entertainment empire.

Yet despite all those achievements, she revealed that her greatest breakthrough was internal. "I do have some girls now that I've mentored who are in their early thirties, who've gotten to it sooner."

She added: "But for me it was 44 where I locked in…I could see the rising for myself. I wasn't just doing things for other people." She stopped chasing validation and said she found confidence to make decisions what truly mattered to her.

Oprah Winfrey's biggest breakthrough didn't happen overnight

She began her broadcasting career at just 19 years old after becoming the youngest person and the first Black woman to anchor the local news at Nashville's WTVF-TV. After graduating from Tennessee State University, she moved to Maryland, where she worked as a reporter and later co-hosted the talk show People Are Talking.

The breakthrough came when she was 30. In 1984, Winfrey moved to Chicago to host A.M. Chicago, a struggling morning television program. Many believed competing against daytime television legend Phil Donahue was a risky move.

But the move paid off and within a few months, A.M. Chicago became the city's highest-rated daytime program. A few years later, it expanded nationally as The Oprah Winfrey Show, launching one of the most successful television careers in history. In the very same year, Winfrey founded Harpo Productions, allowing her to own the content she created.

Oprah Winfrey says your twenties are for putting in the work

Even though Winfrey believes life begins at 44, she doesn't suggest that you should be easy-going in your twenties. Instead, she said your twenties should be dedicated to building experience and developing your craft.

"You ain't gonna have no work-life balance at 22, 23." She continued: "You're not supposed to have it. You're supposed to lay it in, lay in the work."

Winfrey's influence eventually stretched far beyond daytime television. Over the years she has:
