A study conducted in six Napa Valley vineyards found that areas with higher barn owl activity had 38% to 52% fewer rodents than vineyards with little or no owl activity. Researchers also discovered that rodents became significantly more cautious when the predators were nearby, potentially reducing the amount of time they spent feeding around grapevines. The findings could offer California wine growers another way to manage pests while reducing their dependence on chemical pesticides.

Barn owls may be doing more than eating rodents
The research, published in the journal Ecological Applications, was led by Cal Poly Humboldt Wildlife Professor Matt Johnson and graduate student Katherine Larson, alongside UC Davis Wildlife Professor Roger Baldwin.The team wanted to answer a bigger question: Do barn owls actually reduce the number of rodents in vineyards, or do they simply change how rodents behave?

To find out, researchers studied six Napa Valley vineyards in 2023. They monitored barn owl nest boxes while also placing food trays around the vineyards.
The food left behind gave researchers an indication of how threatened rodents felt. When predators are nearby, animals generally become more cautious and spend less time feeding. The results were striking.
What farms with barn owls showed?
Vineyards with more active barn owls had 38% to 52% fewer rodents compared with areas where few or no owls were present. But the influence just did not stop there. Rodents became more afraid when owls were aroundResearchers found that rodents in areas with greater barn owl activity showed a 16% to 38% increase in fear of predators. That behavioral change matters because rodents can damage grapevines even when they are not being directly killed by predators.

When rodents feel threatened, they may spend less time feeding and avoid exposed areas. In other words, the presence of barn owls can potentially create a "fear effect" that limits rodent activity around crops.
This means the birds may provide two layers of protection: they hunt rodents, while their presence can also make surviving rodents more cautious.
California has more than 500 owl boxes in its wine regions
The Napa Valley study is part of a much larger research programme that has been tracking barn owls in California's wine country since 2015. Johnson's team has monitored more than 500 barn owl nest boxes installed across vineyards and other wine-producing regions of California.Researchers found that between 30% and 75% of the nest boxes are occupied by breeding barn owls in a given year.
There is also a considerable payoff when a family establishes itself. One family of barn owls can remove as many as 4,000 rodents in a year, according to the research.
Why vegetation can make barn owls more effective
The study also uncovered an interesting relationship between vegetation and the predator-prey dynamic. Barn owls primarily use hearing to locate their prey, while rodents depend heavily on their vision to detect approaching threats.Researchers found that areas with greater plant cover appeared to give barn owls an advantage when hunting rodents.
The findings suggest that vineyard design and surrounding vegetation could influence how effective natural predators are at controlling pests.
Barn owls also showed preferences when it came to nest boxes.
The birds favored tall wooden boxes around 24 inches high, mounted on poles more than 12 feet above the ground. They were particularly successful in areas with abundant grassland and relatively little forest cover nearby.
However, vineyards should not expect owls to move in immediately. Researchers noted that it can take one to three years for a barn owl to occupy a new nest box.
California vineyards are looking beyond pesticides
Rodent damage is a recurring problem for vineyards, particularly during the warmer growing season when grapevines are actively developing. The latest findings suggest that encouraging natural predators could become one part of a broader approach to pest control.Instead of relying solely on chemical methods, vineyards can potentially combine habitat management, nest boxes and natural predators with other forms of integrated pest management.
The approach could also have a wider environmental benefit by supporting biodiversity around agricultural land.
What vineyard owners say about the owl research
Grgich Hills Estate in Napa Valley has participated in Johnson's barn owl research since the programme began in 2015.Ivo Jeramaz, the winery's winemaker and vice president of Vineyards and Production, said the long-term research has helped the vineyard make more informed decisions about pest management.
"We've been a part of Professor Johnson's study since its inception in 2015, and the data he has shared with us over his years of research has been invaluable. It has allowed us to make informed decisions regarding our integrated pest management system, which has reduced rodent pressure significantly in our vineyards over the years."
The research team says the relationship between agriculture and wildlife does not necessarily have to be a conflict.
"For years, we've studied how wildlife and agriculture can work together. Wine grape systems provide a unique opportunity to demonstrate that biodiversity and farming can not only coexist but can create mutual benefits," Johnson said.
Could barn owls become the future of natural pest control?
The Napa Valley research does not suggest that barn owls are a standalone replacement for every form of rodent control. Instead, it adds evidence that predators can play a meaningful role in integrated pest management.The combination of fewer rodents and increased rodent caution is particularly interesting. The study indicates that the impact of barn owls may extend beyond the number of rodents they physically capture.
For California vineyards facing ongoing pest pressure, that could make the humble barn owl an increasingly important part of a more sustainable farming strategy.
And with hundreds of nest boxes already being monitored across wine country, researchers now have a growing body of long-term data to understand exactly how these nighttime hunters can help protect crops while supporting a healthier agricultural ecosystem.
