NASA has completed a crucial series of wind tunnel tests on SpaceX's next-generation Super Heavy V3 booster, marking another step toward the agency's ambitious Artemis III mission.

The testing campaign is expected to provide engineers with valuable aerodynamic data that could help refine the massive rocket before it supports future lunar exploration efforts.

Critical testing completed at NASA Ames

The latest evaluation took place at NASA's Ames Research Center in California, where engineers tested a highly detailed scale model of the upgraded Super Heavy V3 booster inside advanced wind tunnels.


The experiments recreated the intense aerodynamic forces the rocket experiences during launch, particularly as it accelerates through the transonic and supersonic phases of flight.

Sensors embedded throughout the model collected pressure and airflow data across different sections of the booster, helping engineers understand how the vehicle behaves under extreme conditions.

Why these wind tunnel tests matter

Although SpaceX has already conducted multiple Starship flight tests, controlled wind tunnel experiments allow engineers to examine airflow with a level of precision that flight testing alone cannot provide.

The information gathered will be used to validate computer simulations, improve aerodynamic performance and identify areas where the booster's design can be further optimized before future missions.

Such testing is considered a key part of reducing technical risk for spacecraft intended to support NASA's long-term lunar exploration programme.

Super Heavy V3 to play a key Artemis role

The Super Heavy booster forms the first stage of SpaceX's Starship launch system, generating the thrust needed to lift the spacecraft from Earth.

NASA has selected a version of Starship as the Human Landing System (HLS) for the Artemis programme.

While NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) will carry astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, Starship will be responsible for supporting critical lunar landing operations as part of future Artemis missions.

Artemis III moves closer

Planned mission activities include testing rendezvous and docking operations between Orion and commercial lunar landing systems developed by SpaceX and other partners before later missions target the lunar surface.
