Luis Arraez heads to Phillies as MLB trade deadline explodes with blockbuster deals

The MLB trade deadline delivered another wave of high-profile moves on Monday, with the Philadelphia Phillies strengthening their lineup by acquiring three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants.

The deal came just hours after several contenders, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays, made significant additions in a bid to boost their postseason hopes.

Phillies add Luis Arraez to strengthen offense

Philadelphia made one of the biggest moves of deadline day by bringing in Arraez, one of baseball's most consistent contact hitters.


The 29-year-old enters the final stretch of the season leading the National League with a .324 batting average, continuing an impressive comeback campaign after joining the Giants on a one-year contract before the season.

The Phillies hope Arraez's ability to get on base and consistently put the ball in play will create more scoring opportunities for power hitters Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, who have combined for nearly 100 home runs but have received limited production from the top of the batting order.

Philadelphia also received reliever Caleb Kilian in the deal while sending two minor league prospects to San Francisco.

The Phillies did not stop with Arraez.

The club completed a separate trade with the New York Mets to acquire experienced left-handed reliever Brooks Raley, adding another reliable option to the bullpen as it prepares for the playoff race.

Dodgers continue aggressive title defense

The Los Angeles Dodgers had already made headlines before Monday by securing one of the biggest names available.

The defending champions acquired two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, adding another frontline starter to an already formidable pitching rotation as they pursue a third consecutive World Series championship.

The move further strengthened a roster widely viewed as one of the strongest in Major League Baseball.

Yankees, Rays and Cubs stay active

Several other contenders also moved aggressively before the trade deadline.

The New York Yankees added young slugger Luis García Jr. to provide more offensive firepower while Aaron Judge remains unavailable.

The Tampa Bay Rays upgraded their starting rotation with the addition of right-hander Freddy Peralta, while the Chicago Cubs strengthened their pitching staff by acquiring veteran starter Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Activity remained brisk across the league as clubs continued reshaping their rosters.

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired right-hander José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels, a move aimed at strengthening the club's long-term rotation. Soriano is under team control through the 2028 season, making him an important addition beyond this year's campaign.

The Atlanta Braves added experienced left-handed reliever Brent Suter from the Angels to bolster bullpen depth, while the Chicago White Sox strengthened their relief corps by trading for Huascar Brazobán from the Mets.

Deadline drama may not be over

Although several headline-making trades have already been completed, attention remains on players who could still change teams before the deadline.

Among the biggest names generating interest are San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller and Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho, both viewed as potential impact additions for clubs with championship ambitions.

With playoff races tightening across both leagues, every move made before the deadline could prove decisive in the battle for October baseball.
