How Christmas trees are helping restore wetlands
The nearly 30-year-old program is a partnership between the City of New Orleans, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Louisiana Army National Guard.In March 2025 alone, crews collected nearly 9,000 Christmas trees before bundling them into groups of 50 to 60. Military helicopters then transported the bundles to carefully selected locations inside the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, where teams positioned them to maximize their impact.
The trees are arranged in long rows that act as natural barriers, slowing the movement of water through the marsh.
Why old trees make a difference
When water slows down, it drops the mud, sand, and silt it carries. Over time, this sediment builds up around the tree branches, gradually raising the marsh surface.As the ground becomes more stable, marsh grasses begin to grow. Their root systems bind the soil together, creating stronger wetlands that can support fish, birds, crabs, shrimp, crawfish, and other wildlife.
The trees themselves are only a temporary structure. As they naturally decompose, the newly formed sediment and vegetation continue strengthening the marsh, helping reduce erosion and everyday wave action.
Scientists say the method works — but with limits
Researchers have been studying Christmas-tree marsh restoration for decades.A 1997 study published in Ecological Engineering found that recycled Christmas-tree barriers reduced wave energy by about 50% in test areas. In some sheltered locations, sediment accumulated at rates of up to 1.3 inches per year, while vegetation returned after roughly three years at one monitoring site.
However, scientists also found that results depend heavily on where the barriers are installed. If water is too deep, sediment can still collect, but it may take years before marsh plants can establish themselves.
Researchers stress that Christmas trees alone cannot stop Louisiana's coastal land loss. Instead, they work best as part of broader wetland restoration projects.
Why Louisiana needs solutions like this
Louisiana has lost nearly 2,000 square miles of coastal land since the 1930s due to erosion, powerful storms, rising sea levels, land subsidence, and reduced sediment flowing from the Mississippi River into nearby wetlands.These marshes play a vital role by absorbing floodwater, reducing wave impacts, supporting wildlife, and helping protect nearby communities and infrastructure.
The Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, located east of New Orleans, contains some of the last remaining marshland between Lakes Pontchartrain and Borgne, making it a key focus of restoration efforts.
Residents are part of the restoration effort
After the holiday season, residents are encouraged to donate real Christmas trees instead of throwing them away. Before collection, all decorations, lights, tinsel, artificial snow, and tree stands must be removed so that only natural wood enters the wetlands.The program has already restored significant marshland. Federal refuge managers reported that by 2023, the annual initiative had helped create around 115 acres of wetlands. City updates have also described the restored area as being roughly equivalent to 200 to 330 football fields, depending on the reporting period.
The effort continues to expand. During the 2025-26 holiday season, donated Christmas trees were once again collected for restoration projects. In July 2026, Louisiana National Guard crews also delivered recycled trees to vulnerable marshes near Madisonville along the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, continuing an innovative conservation project that turns holiday waste into a powerful tool for protecting the state's fragile coastline.
