King Charles is preparing to step away from public life for his annual summer break at Balmoral Castle, the royal family's long-standing private retreat in the Scottish Highlands, according to Hello Magazine. As the monarch gets ready to spend time at the historic estate, Balmoral has officially closed its gates to visitors until autumn, marking the start of the royal family's traditional summer stay. Charles was recently seen in Dingwall, Scotland, wearing a traditional tartan kilt and greeting locals ahead of his annual retreat.

Balmoral closes for the royal family's summer stay

Balmoral Castle welcomes thousands of visitors every year, but only for a limited period of time. According to the estate's official website, the grounds, gardens, Mews Gift Shop, Restaurant and Ballroom Exhibition remained open until August 9. From August 10, the estate temporarily closes to the public while the royal family spends its summer there.


Visitors during the public season could explore the gardens, walk through parts of the estate and visit the Castle Ballroom, which hosts the annual exhibition. Balmoral is expected to reopen in early October.

Why Balmoral means so much to King Charles

Balmoral has been part of the royal family's history since Prince Albert bought the estate for Queen Victoria in 1852. Set within Scotland's Cairngorms National Park, it has remained a favorite summer retreat for generations of British royals.

For King Charles, the estate is especially meaningful because he has spent summers there since childhood. In the foreword to Balmoral's official guidebook, the King described the estate as a place unlike any other.

"With its buildings of startling individuality, which never fail to fascinate, and its precious, almost sacred, surrounding landscape, it is a place where there is constant change, yet everything remains unaltered, with a sense of timelessness which refreshes the soul," he wrote.

A place filled with family memories

Balmoral became even more significant after Queen Elizabeth II spent her final days there before her death on September 8, 2022. Reflecting on the estate after his mother's passing, Charles shared how deeply connected his family remains to the Scottish residence.

"Since my earliest childhood, it has held, and continues to hold, a uniquely special place in the hearts of my family and myself, and my late mother particularly treasured her time at Balmoral. It was here, in these most beloved of surroundings, that she chose to spend her final days," he wrote.

The words highlight why Balmoral continues to be much more than a royal residence—it is a place filled with family history, personal memories and tradition.
