Kennedy Center’s Trump name dispute heads toward another court clash

President Donald Trump’s name is headed back onto the Kennedy Center, setting up a fresh legal confrontation over one of Washington’s most politically charged cultural landmarks.

The board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts voted Thursday to add a tribute to Trump to the building’s facade and rename the surrounding grounds “President Donald J. Trump Plaza,” according to Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex officio member of the board.

The move is particularly striking because a federal judge ruled just months ago that the Kennedy Center could not be formally renamed for Trump without an act of Congress.

What the Kennedy Center plans to put on the building

Rather than replacing the Kennedy Center name entirely, the board voted to add the words “Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump” to the facade.

The site itself would carry the separate Trump Plaza designation.

The decision appears designed to recognize Trump while preserving the center’s existing formal name — a distinction that could become central to the legal battle now taking shape.

Beatty, who has already sued over the administration’s changes at the Kennedy Center, said the board’s latest decision attempts to get around the court’s earlier ruling. The Kennedy Center did not immediately comment, while the White House praised Trump’s role in reshaping the institution.

Why Trump’s name was removed in the first place

The dispute dates back to December, when the Trump-dominated board voted to put his name on the Kennedy Center.

That decision was challenged in federal court. In May, US District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the board did not have the authority to officially rename the center because Congress had established it as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy.

The court declared the previous renaming effort legally invalid and ordered the removal of Trump’s name from official references and signage.

Workers eventually removed the lettering from the building in June after appeals courts declined to keep the Trump signage in place while the legal fight continued.

Trump’s board now wants a two-year shutdown

The naming dispute is unfolding alongside another controversial decision.

The board also voted to close the Kennedy Center for roughly two years for renovations, according to Beatty. The plan has already been the subject of litigation, with questions raised over how the closure would affect the institution’s cultural mission and finances.

A court had previously scrutinized the proposed shutdown and demanded more information about its necessity and potential consequences.

The board’s latest vote means the future of the Kennedy Center is now tied to two major questions: how far its Trump-aligned leadership can go in changing the institution, and whether those decisions can withstand continued court challenges.

A new legal fight could be coming

The latest move does not erase the earlier ruling that Congress controls the center’s formal name.

That leaves a potentially important distinction between renaming the institution and adding language to its facade or giving the surrounding grounds a new designation.

For Trump and his allies, the changes are part of an effort to overhaul what they view as an outdated and financially troubled institution. Critics, including Beatty, see them as an attempt to sidestep federal law and turn a national memorial into a political project.

The Kennedy Center board is now pushing ahead despite the court history, meaning the next chapter may be decided not by a vote inside the building, but by another battle in federal court.
