George Clooney and Amal forced to evacuate their $10.3 million France home; 'We have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through'

Hollywood actor George Clooney and his British wife Amal, an international human rights lawyer, were forced to flee their luxury home in Brignoles. The couple evacuated their home as a result of the wildfires blazing in the southern French ‌region, Clooney's ⁠publicist ⁠said on Thursday.

The Clooneys bought their Brignoles home on a vineyard in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in 2021 when it had an estimated value of around €9 million ($10.3 million).

Why did George Clooney, Amal Clooney flee their home?

George Clooney and Amal Clooney announced their departure in a letter to the Brignoles mayor, sharing their concern for the community as wildfire ravages France. "At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," the couple said in a letter to the mayor of Brignoles quoted by People magazine.

They said they hoped all their neighbours remained safe. "Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole," the letter said.

The publicist shared with Reuters a letter that the actor sent to Didier Bremond, Mayor of Brignoles, expressing his concerns as many regions of France battle wildfires.

Clooney's estate includes a 18th-century manor house, a pond, a swimming pool, and vineyards, set within a 170-hectare (420-acre) property. The couple and their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, obtained French citizenship in 2025.

Why did the couple move to France?

Clooney said in 2025 the family's decision to move to France was shaped by his concerns about raising their children twins Ella and Alexander in Los Angeles.

He told Esquire magazine: "I don't want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don't want them being compared to somebody else's famous kids."

"We live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it.

"But now, for them, it's like – they're not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."

Wildfires in France

Europe is battling a fresh wave of devastating wildfires as scorching temperatures and dry conditions fuel fast-moving blazes across several countries.

In France, massive fires burning through pine forests have forced the evacuation of more than 220,000 residents and tourists. The wildfire in the Gironde region has scorched around 42,000 hectares (103,784 acres), making it the country's largest wildfire since 1949. Officials say there is cautious optimism after firefighters managed to contain the blaze for a third straight day, with rain forecast to aid firefighting efforts.

Meanwhile, Greece and Spain continue to battle multiple wildfire outbreaks. On the Greek island of Crete, thousands of people have been evacuated as powerful winds intensified one of the fires, causing it to spread rapidly.

The crisis turned deadly on Wednesday when two firefighters lost their lives after becoming trapped near Krya Vrysi on Crete. A third firefighter was killed while responding to another wildfire near the port town of Gytheio in the Peloponnese region.
