The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Mia Bieniemy, was reportedly shot at the Virginia home she shares with the coach. The incident happened on July 26, Sunday and Mia Bieniemy is undergoing treatment at a hospital, reports ESPN.

According to CNN, the son of Eric Bieniemy has been arrested and charged with the shooting of his mother. Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of the couple, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, and is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Who is Mia Bieniemy?

Mia Bieniemy, wife of Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was hospitalized after being shot at their Virginia home. Eric Bieniemy was in Missouri for Chiefs training camp when the incident occurred.

The Kansas City Chiefs said they are aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family, while authorities in Loudoun County, Virginia, confirmed that one person suffered serious injuries in a shooting but did not publicly identify the victim.

According to ESPN Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor, Mia Bieniemy is in stable condition following the shooting. In the aftermath of the incident, Eric Bieniemy stepped away from the Chiefs' training camp to be with his family and was absent from Monday's practice.

In a statement to ESPN, the Chiefs said, "We are aware of an incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family," but declined to provide additional details.

What do we know about Eric Bieniemy?

Despite nearly 25 years of coaching experience, Eric Bieniemy has yet to land an NFL head coaching job. His reputation soared during his first stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he served as offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022. During that period, the Chiefs developed one of the league's most explosive offenses and won multiple AFC titles and Super Bowl championships.

After repeatedly being passed over for head coaching opportunities, Bieniemy left Kansas City to become the Washington Commanders' offensive coordinator in 2023. His tenure lasted just one season, as the franchise's new coaching staff opted not to retain him following organizational changes.

In 2024, Bieniemy transitioned to the college ranks, joining UCLA as an assistant coach. He returned to the NFL in 2025 as the Chicago Bears' running backs coach, continuing to build on his extensive coaching résumé.

Following the end of the 2025 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs parted ways with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and brought Eric Bieniemy back to lead the offense once again. The reunion marks Bieniemy's second stint as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator under head coach Andy Reid.

The move was warmly welcomed by Chiefs star Travis Kelce, who has spoken highly of Bieniemy over the years. However, the Commanders struggled to a 4-13 record with Sam Howell as their starting quarterback, and Bieniemy departed after just one season.

He then spent the 2024 season on the coaching staff at UCLA before returning to the NFL in 2025 as the Chicago Bears' running backs coach under first-year head coach Ben Johnson.

Before leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy played a key role in building one of the NFL's most explosive offenses. During his first stint as offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, the Chiefs won two Super Bowl titles and made multiple deep playoff runs, cementing his reputation as one of the league's top offensive minds. Despite that success, Bieniemy has yet to secure an NFL head coaching position.

His return to Kansas City was celebrated by Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who praised the veteran coach and their long-standing relationship.
