Apple TV adds The Martian, Titanic, The Sixth Sense and more movies at no extra cost

If you already have an Apple TV subscription, there is some good news. You can now watch a selection of popular Hollywood movies without paying extra to rent or buy them.

Apple has added a collection of older hits to its streaming catalogue, including The Martian, Arrival, Titanic, The Sixth Sense and Gone Girl. The movies are available through a new “Great Movies Available Now on Apple TV” section in the Apple TV app.

For viewers who usually have to rent these movies separately through the Apple TV Store, this is a welcome change.

What movies can you watch for free on Apple TV?

The selection depends on your country. In the US, the newly added movies include:

• The Proposal
• I, Robot
• Forgetting Sarah Marshall
• 21 Jump Street
• The Sixth Sense
• Gone Girl
• Zoolander
• Zodiac

• A Beautiful Mind
• The Aviator
• The Rookie

Apple labels these movies “Just Added”, and they can be streamed as part of an Apple TV subscription rather than purchased individually.

One thing to keep in mind: Apple has not said whether these movies are being added permanently or only for a limited period. The company tried a similar experiment a few years ago, but that catalogue did not remain available for long.

How much does Apple TV cost?

In the US, Apple TV costs $12.99 per month or $99 per year. New users can also get a seven-day free trial, while Apple TV is included in the Apple One subscription bundle.

You can watch through the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and Windows devices, or stream through a web browser.

The movie selection can vary by country, so some of the titles listed above may not be available in your region.

Apple TV is changing its streaming strategy

The move is notable because Apple TV has largely built its reputation around original shows and movies, rather than maintaining the huge back catalogue offered by services such as Netflix or Prime Video.

Since launching in 2019, Apple has built a library of more than 300 originals. Ted Lasso, The Studio and CODA have helped establish the service, while F1 became a major success for Apple's growing entertainment business.

Apple dropped the “+” from Apple TV last year, and the company appears to be putting more emphasis on making the service a broader entertainment destination.

Incoming CEO John Ternus said in July that he wants to build on Apple's momentum in entertainment, while CEO Tim Cook said the company's strategy is to focus on offering quality rather than simply having the biggest catalogue.
