After beating cancer, this California woman and her dog found hope on the waves and now they’re surfing together at World Dog Surfing Championships

A California woman and her beloved dog have turned an unexpected health battle into an inspiring journey on the waves. Sophia Sadlowski, from Huntington Beach, California, and her Miniature Pinscher, Rusty, are both cancer survivors. Now, the unlikely surfing duo is competing together at a World Dog Surfing Championships, showing how a shared bond between a dog and its owner can turn difficult moments into something memorable.

Sadlowski first put Rusty on a surfboard simply to take some fun photos when her Miniature Pinscher was still a puppy. But Rusty apparently had other plans.

"And then ... he didn’t want to get off,” said Sadlowski, of Huntington Beach, California. “I walk over to the beach, and I put him on a wave, and he surfed it.”


The first ride quickly turned into something much bigger. Rusty took to the water naturally, and Sadlowski soon discovered that her small dog had a genuine talent for surfing.

Rusty entered his first competition at just four months old

Rusty's first dog surfing competition came when he was only four months old. Despite being so young, the tiny surfer managed to finish third.

“He was four months old, and he took third place. So we've been surfing since," Sadlowski told news agency AP. “We got hooked.”

From those early days, Sadlowski and Rusty continued riding waves together. What started as a playful puppy photo opportunity eventually became a competitive passion for the pair.

Rusty has the look of a tiny surfing champion

Rusty may be small, but he certainly looks ready for competition. His surfing gear includes a green animal-print life jacket with a shark fin sticking out from his back. His goggles add another distinctive touch, giving him the appearance of a fierce little competitor.

The Miniature Pinscher has competed in small-sized and tandem dog surfing categories, with Sadlowski alongside him for their shared rides. Their partnership has made the sport about more than simply catching a wave.

Their story has now taken them to the World Dog Surfing Championships, where Sadlowski and Rusty can showcase the partnership that began when he was just a puppy.
