West Bengal Police recover Rs 20 crore cash, 15 kg gold in sand mafia raid

Kolkata: At a time when West Bengal government is trying to seal revenue leakages, West Bengal Police on Wednesday recovered a huge amount of cash worth Rs 20 crore cash (counting still ongoing) and 15 lakhs of gold from illegal sand mafia Tullu Mondal alias Mohd Nazibuddin’s “hideout”. The state government is taking stringent steps to stop sand and mineral leakage.

Praising West Bengal Director General of Police and Birbhum Police for the recovery, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Wednesday that “Birbhum Police conducted a major raid under Mohammad Bazar Police Station in the hideout of illegal sand mafia Tullu Mondal alias Mohd Nazibuddin and recovered a huge amount Rs 5.5 crore cash with counting still ongoing and 15khs of gold.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, after coming to power, had directed the secretaries of various departments to immediately plug the revenue leakage of minor minerals, stone quarrying, and sand mining, which are done illegally, and lead to state government's loss.


Taking a dig at the former Trinamool government, the chief minister said that “no person with a chequered past who has amassed wealth through the exploitation of public resources and hobnobbing with the then ruling political party will be spared.”

“Public wealth belongs to the people, and those who loot it will face the full might of the law. Vigilance and uncompromising action will continue. Crackdown on mafia syndicates will go on,” CM clarified.

Minar Mondal is Tullu Mondal’s relative and was closely associated with Tullu. Locals said Minar Mondal was associated with Tullu Mondal and was his manager.

“Commendable job by our Law Enforcement personnel for the crackdown on Sand Mafia. Following a precise operation based on source based information, Birbhum Police conducted a major raid under Mohammad Bazar PS targeting the hideout of illegal sand mafia Tullu Mondal alias Mohd Nazibuddin. The operation has uncovered staggering amounts of illegally amassed wealth: Cash Recovered So Far: ₹5.5 crore with counting still ongoing. Gold Recovered: 15 kg,” CM said in his X Handle.

“I deeply appreciate the @WBPolice DGP, SP @BirbhumPolice and the Birbhum District Police Personnel involved in this operation for their swift, professional and decisive action. West Bengal Govt's ongoing drive against the corrupt will go on with 'Zero Tolerance Policy against Corruption' as our guiding principle,” he added.
