West Bengal gearing up healthcare infra; Adani to set up 2,000-bed hospital

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday said that Bengal is gearing up its health sector infrastructure across the state, from block level to Kolkata, and the private sector, including a 2000-bed hospital by the Adani group .

“The present government is committed to widespread transformation in both public and private healthcare systems in West Bengal. We will build such infrastructure, health centres and conducive environment in the coming days,” Adhikari said today at state secretariat Nabanna as he facilitated the NEET aspirants, who ranked from 1-100 in Bengal. Adhikari gifted them with a laptop and other hampers.

“We have already joined the Ayushman Bharat programme. Under the National Health Mission (NHM), we have declared health centres named as 'Ayushman Mandirs' and taken steps to develop people-centric healthcare system,” CM said, adding that with focus on medical education, the state plans to increase MBBS seats and establish four new medical colleges in Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Paschim Bardhaman, and Dakshin Dinajpur, as announced in the budget. “We have also announced plans to set up another AIIMS in North Bengal,” he pointed out.


In addition to enhancing the public health system, the state will also encourage the private healthcare sector. “We have received proposals from the Adani Group, which has signed a written agreement and taken land from us to build an international-standard 2,000-bed hospital, where 1,000 beds will be completely free for financially underprivileged people,” CM said.

Starting from primary block health centers to state hospitals, the state is taking measures to arrange residences for doctors and ensure that physicians can work in a healthy and modern infrastructure.

“From Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras to various modern services—such as CT scans, MRI, SNCU, dialysis units, modern OTs—we have taken plans to beautify and equip the hospitals. In Kolkata's largest hospital, SSKM, plans have been made to increase the number of beds and ICU facilities. We are taking initiatives to address the shortage of doctors and healthcare workers by increasing seats in medical education,” he added.

Speaking to the NEET qualified state toppers, CM urged the future doctors, to serve and love India but also not to forget the motherland Bengal.

AI powered Helplines

West Bengal government launched four AI-powered helplines and control rooms to crackdown Syndicate Raj, Cut money, illegal liquor and illegal toll.

The helplines will enable citizens to report complaints against cut money, syndicate raj, illegal liquor and illegal tax.

The West Bengal Chief Minister on Tuesday announced dedicated toll-free helplines for citizens to report complaints directly regarding “cut money” (bribe), extortion syndicates, illegal toll booths and bootlegging. However, he cautioned the public against misusing the grievance portal to settle personal disputes. “A special control room will be operational from 10 am to 8 pm,” Adhikari said.

“Citizens can register genuine grievances across four toll-free numbers, and prompt action will be taken,” he said.

Speaking at the state police headquarters at Bhawani Bhawan, Adhikari outlined a series of administrative and police reform measures and modernization of the police force. The state government has operationalised the following dedicated numbers:

Adhikari said a board for the welfare of the police force will be floated with sports amenities, gyms and other facilities. He praised the work of the police force, both Kolkata Police and state police, during Taratala incident and other parts of the state.
