Trainer aircraft overshoots runway at Maharashtra’s Baramati airstrip

A trainer aircraft operated by private aviation academy Carver Aviation was involved in a runway excursion incident at the Baramati airstrip in Maharashtra's Pune district on Sunday, police said. No injuries were reported.

The incident occurred at around 12.30 pm during a training exercise at Baramati Airfield, Pune Rural SP Sandeep Singh Gill said.

"An aircraft VT-SEX was involved in a runway excursion incident at Baramati Airfield during a training exercise, with Capt Chirag Shashikant Doifode and Cadet Abhijeet Jundre on board. No injuries have been reported."


The aircraft had taxied out for a circuit and landing emergencies exercise, police officials said.

Aircraft overshoots runway during rejected take-off exercise

Gill said the aircraft initially entered the runway through Link Bravo and lined up at the threshold of Runway 29, where it carried out a rejected take-off.

Thereafter, the aircraft was lined up at the threshold of Runway 11, where another rejected take-off was carried out, a senior police official said.

"During the course of this exercise, the aircraft could not be brought to a complete stop on the runway and continued beyond the threshold of Runway 29. Subsequently, it veered off the extended paved surface to the right side beyond the Runway 29 threshold."

According to police officials, the aircraft went around 20 feet beyond the end of the runway before entering the grassy area.

The cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained. Authorities are examining whether the aircraft developed a technical snag or faced any other technical problem.

"The incident took place near the airstrip. We are investigating whether the aircraft developed a technical snag or if there were any other technical problems. It is too early to comment on anything," a senior police official said.

Baramati's history with aviation mishaps

The incident comes months after a private charter plane carrying then Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others crashed near the Baramati airstrip on January 28 this year, killing all five people on board.

Earlier, on May 13, a trainer aircraft operated by another private company made a crash landing near the Baramati airstrip after reportedly developing a technical snag. No casualties were reported in that incident.
