Tamil Nadu assembly opposes FCRA Amendment Bill, seeks withdrawal in current form
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution, urging the Centre to withdraw the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, in its current form.

Moving the resolution, minister for school education, Tamil development, information and publicity A Rajamohan said the House was deeply concerned over provisions in the bill, relating to the transfer, management, disposal and sale of assets of charitable organisations to the government on grounds such as expiry of FCRA registration, non-renewal or refusal of renewal, cancellation of registration, or surrender of registration.

The proposed legislation could affect educational institutions, elderly care homes and hospitals run by minority organisations and others, he said, adding: "The Tamil Nadu government objects to this."

"While ensuring transparency and accountability in foreign contributions, it must also protect the rights of lawfully functioning charitable, educational, medical, religious, cultural and social welfare organisations," the resolution stated. The assembly has also urged the Centre to hold wider consultations before proceeding with the proposed changes.
