Manipur violence: SC proposes spl courts to hear CBI, NIA cases on day-to-day basis

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday proposed the constitution of special courts to exclusively adjudicate cases related to the Manipur ethnic violence which are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, urged the Chief Justice of the Gauhati HC to constitute special courts, separately, to hear CBI and NIA cases linked to the 2023 Manipur violence on a day-to-day basis.

The bench made the suggestion after perusing the investigations conducted by the two federal agencies. Speaking for the bench, CJI Kant remarked that the court was concerned about whether the existing special judges handling CBI and NIA cases related to the Manipur violence were also dealing other matters.

The Registrar General of the Gauhati HC has been directed to submit a status report before the next hearing. Additionally, the bench directed that details of the cases be compiled and made available to the lawyers and families of those affected.

"The request is that particulars of those cases, including the relevant case numbers and status of the proceedings, be made available so that the legal counsel as well as the families concerned have access to the reports and proceedings," CJI Kant remarked.

The bench took stock of the security situation in Manipur and directed the state and central security agencies to ensure that the CBI and NIA could carry out their investigations without interruption.
