Sonam Wangchuk leads march in Leh

Srinagar: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk led a march in Leh along with members of civil society organisation Apex Body Leh Wednesday, on the eve of the anniversary of the death of four people during a protest seeking statehood and constitutional safeguards for the union territory.

The Kargil Democratic Alliance held a similar march in Kargil, where hundreds of people participated, including members of the Socialist Party of India and a group of students from Delhi University.

Members of the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil socio-political organisations plan to hold a big gathering at a stadium in Leh Thursday in remembrance of the people killed on September 24, 2025. They are also expected to reiterate their position in the wake of ongoing dialogue between representatives of Ladakh and the union home ministry.

The two organisations stated that no major irreversible restructuring should be done on matters such as governance mechanisms and land transfers before an elected body is in place in the union territory.

"Hundreds of people have joined us in this march and tomorrow people will gather in Leh and offer prayers for peace and progress of the region," said Wangchuk.
