Goyal's visit assumes significance as India and the US continue negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). "The US is hosting the G20 trade ministers meeting in October. The minister is likely to attend it," the official said.
Last week, Goyal said the first tranche of the BTA would come into force as soon as Washington ensured that India secured a comparative advantage over its competitors.
India has also participated in the Section 301 investigations initiated by the US against India and several other countries. While tariffs have been imposed under one investigation, the outcome of the other is awaited.
India's goods exports to the US fell 0.06% year-on-year to $25.46 billion in the first quarter of FY27, while imports rose 23.82% to $16.6 billion.

"At the G20 Trade Ministerial this fall, USTR will lead discussions with the G20 trade ministers on a wide array of issues, including ending forced labour, updating the Most-Favored Nation (MFN) principle, denouncing weaponisation of trade in food and addressing structural excess capacity and production," US trade representative Jamieson Greer had said in May.
He added that Washington looked forward to working with its G20 partners to "establish a global trading order based on fair, reciprocal and balanced trade".
