Smoke in Mumbai-bound Mahalaxmi Express sparks panic; no casualty

Thane: Smoke was detected in one of the coaches of the Mahalaxmi Express train heading from Kolhapur to Mumbai near Karjat in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Tuesday morning, briefly triggering panic among passengers, police said.

No casualties were reported in the incident, which occurred in the Monkey Hill section of Karjat, located about 90 km from Mumbai, they said.

The smoke was possibly caused by a short circuit, according to the Government Railway Police (GRP). Railway authorities promptly attended to the affected coach, following which the train resumed its onward journey, they said.

"No one was injured in the incident," Karjat GRP's Senior Police Inspector Kiran Matkar said.

The train, scheduled to pass Karjat station around 5.30 am, was delayed after smoke was detected in a coach. It crossed the station at around 6.15 am after the coach was inspected and necessary action by authorities, officials said.
