Mysterious well in Gujarat’s Morbi keeps producing strange waves without earthquake; locals gather to witness the unusual phenomenon

A newly constructed well in Gujarat’s Morbi district has become the centre of attention after its water surface began showing continuous waves and ripples for several days, despite there being no reported seismic activity in the area.

The unusual phenomenon in a remote village has drawn curious villagers, commuters and passersby, with many gathering at the spot to watch the water move. While some locals wondered whether the ripples could be linked to an earthquake or underground movement, officials have ruled out a seismic connection for now.

Why is water rippling in Gujarat well?

According to a PTI report, district geologist J S Vadher said the unusual movement could be linked to groundwater recharge following heavy upstream rainfall.

Vadher explained that air trapped in the pore spaces of rocks may be escaping as groundwater moves underground, creating a disturbance on the surface of the well.

“This is not a seismic activity,” Vadher told PTI.

He said the phenomenon appeared, prima facie, to be connected with groundwater recharge and the release of trapped air beneath the ground.

Gujarat well waves continue for five days

The unusual activity has reportedly continued for around five days, turning the 18-foot-deep well into a local attraction.

People from nearby areas have been visiting the site to see the water continuously forming waves and ripples. The phenomenon has also sparked speculation among locals about whether there could be an underground geological movement.

However, officials have so far found no evidence of seismic activity behind the unusual water movement.

No active fault line found near Morbi well

Vadher told PTI that officials had consulted the Institute of Seismological Research in Gandhinagar following concerns about a possible earthquake-related cause.

According to the geologist, the institute confirmed that no active fault line exists in the area.

This has further weakened speculation that the strange waves in the well are connected to an earthquake or tremors beneath the region.

Gujarat government sends team to investigate mystery well

Although officials have ruled out a seismic cause, the unusual phenomenon is still being investigated.

Morbi district collector Swapnil Khare said a team from Gandhinagar would visit the location to examine the well and determine what is causing the continuous disturbance.

“We have informed the Gujarat government about it, and a team from Gandhinagar will visit the site for further investigation,” Khare said, according to PTI.

The investigation is expected to provide more clarity on the source of the unusual water movement.

Farmer says well water has been spilling over

The farm owner, Pranjivan Sadariya, said he first noticed the unusual activity on August 2.

According to Sadariya, the water was already behaving unusually when he arrived at his farm, with water spilling over the edge of the well. He said the condition has continued since then.

Interestingly, the well itself is relatively new. Sadariya said it was constructed only around three months ago.

Is the Gujarat well phenomenon linked to an earthquake?

For now, officials say no. The district geologist has ruled out seismic activity as the likely explanation, while the Institute of Seismological Research has reportedly found no active fault line in the area.

The preliminary explanation points towards heavy rainfall, groundwater recharge and air escaping through cracks or pore spaces in underground rocks.

However, the final cause will only become clearer after the Gandhinagar team completes its investigation. Until then, the mysterious waves in the Gujarat well continue to intrigue locals and visitors alike.
