Meghalaya govt to set Up FCRA cell in home dept to coordinate with centre

Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma has announced that the state will establish a dedicated Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) cell within the home department to assist organisations with renewals and applications under the act.

"The purpose of this cell will be to help coordinate with the central government and find an effective way to address different problems faced by our organisations when it comes to renewals and applications, here in Shillong, without having to travel to distant places like Delhi," the CM said on Thursday. He added, "While the procedures to monitor and regulate foreign currency are being followed, our people should not suffer or face difficulties and challenges, or have their assets seized. Striking a balance between these two needs is really the need of the hour."

On August 11, the Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM) held a rally in Aizawl against the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026. CCM president Dr R Lalbiakliana said the church body remained concerned about provisions that could affect Christians and other minority communities. Meghalaya Congress president Vincent Pala had termed the FCRA Amendment Bill a tool for religious harassment.


Around six million Christians live in Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya, while a significant number also live in the other northeastern states of Manipur, Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

The Lok Sabha sent the FCRA bill to a 31-member joint committee amid protests by Opposition parties.
