Manipur: UNC calls 24-hour shutdown after attack kills two Naga people in Kangpokpi district

Guwahati: The United Naga Council (UNC) the apex body of Nagas in Manipur has called a 24-hour Emergency Total Shutdown in all Naga districts and Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur from 11 pm on August 14 to 11 pm on August 15, following an attack on Naga people.

Two people were killed and two injured in a attack by suspected militants on Friday. Fresh violence erupted in Manipur's conflict-hit Kangpokpi district on Friday which led to the death of two person and two others seriously injured.The attack took place at Langka Naga village along the Kangpokpi-Tamenglong.

The UNC condemned what it described as a “barbaric and calculated attack” by KNF-P Kuki militants, in which two people were killed and two others injured.

The deceased were identified as Wiriliangbou Chawang and Kawidinang Abonmai. The injured were identified as Maliangjinang Abonmai and Namthiulungbou Prinmai.

The injured were airlifted by the Indian Army from Haochong to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

The UNC said the attack on Naga Independence Day was a direct challenge to the Naga people, their identity and their right to self-determination. Naga people and NSCN-IM celebrates August 14 as Independence Day.

IDP protest

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) staying in several relief camps across Manipur observed Independence Day with black flag protests, expressing unhappiness over prolonged displacement and demanding an early and resettlement.

The protest was held at several relief camps where displaced people hoisted black flags to register their opposition to Independence Day celebrations while thousands continue to remain without permanent homes.

Protestors said, "We have no meaning for ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ as we have no ‘ghar’ (home).
