Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh interacts with star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu through video conference

Guwahati: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh interacted with India's star weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu through video conference from the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri, Imphal.

While extending his heartiest congratulations to her, the Chief Minister said that Mirabai Chanu has once again made the whole country proud. He said that her hard work, discipline and perseverance are an inspiration for all young sportspersons of the country, especially for the youth of Manipur.

He added that the State Government will continue to support sportspersons and will provide all possible help to promote sports in the State.


Khemchand Singh further said that her achievement has added another medal to India's tally and has made the nation proud. He said that Manipur is proud of her remarkable feat and wished her continued success in the future. The people of Manipur stand with her.

Mirabai Chanu, while interacting with the Chief Minister, said that she was very happy to see the people of Manipur supporting her and standing by her.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has once again created history. She won her first ever Asian Games medal today by claiming the silver medal in the women's 48 kg category at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Centre during the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Japan.

This is the first medal for India in this category after 28 years since Karnam Malleswari won it at the Bangkok Asian Games in 1998. She lifted 87 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk, with a total lift of 198 kg, to finish with the silver medal.

Secretary, Youth Affairs and Sports, Naorem Praveen Singh said that work for the opening of the Mirabai Weightlifting Academy is in full progress.

During the video conference, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Art and Culture Minister Kh. Loken Singh, and MLA of Konthoujam Assembly Constituency Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh also congratulated Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on her winning silver medal.
