Manipur: 35 courier bags of postal department allegedly looted and burnt in Ukhrul district

Guwahati: Incident of alleged looting and burning of 35 courier bags of postal department has come from Ukhrul district in Manipur.

A senior officer in the postal department unidentified miscreants burnt the courier bags. A person Nazir Hussain filed has an FIR at the Litan Police Station, Ukhrul District, on Monday.

The FIR was filed under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 221, Obstructing public servant in discharging duties; BNS 189(2) Unlawful assembly; BNS 326 Mischief; BNS 324(4) mischief causing moderate financial damage; BNS 351(3) Criminal Intimidation; BNS Common intention Arms Act, and 25(1-C) Unauthorised possession of prohibited arms.


As per the FIR, the complainant stated that he, on 27/07/2026, joined a convoy escort team from Yaingangpokpi carrying postal/courier items to be delivered to the Post Office, Ukhrul. However, upon reaching Shangkai Village, all vehicles in the convoy were stopped and checked by Kuki volunteers. After that some individuals armed with concealed weapons approached him, forcibly boarded the Post Office vehicle, and compelled him to drive forward at gunpoint.

“During this time, some security personnel inquired about our destination. The armed individuals threatened me, pressing a gun to my thigh and instructing me to remain silent. As such, I could not respond. They informed the security personnel that they were only going to offload courier items,” he said.

They then drove to the Shangkai Village ground, where the courier items were unloaded, and a total of 36 bags of courier items were burnt.

According to Ukhrul Sub-Post Office Postmaster Wungreipam Rimai, the incident occurred on the Yaingangpokpi-Litan Road. The destroyed consignment bags meant for Ukhrul, Somdal and one Kamjong.

The Department of Posts is currently assessing the extent of the damage and has initiated steps to restore postal services in the affected areas. Thirty-five postal bags carried ATM cards, passports and letters.

On Monday, a mob enforced a blockade on NH 202 in Ukhrul, intercepted a convoy of trucks near Shangkai Kuki village and destroyed several items being transported from Imphal to the district headquarters.

The National Highway 202 connects Mokokchung in Nagaland to Imphal in Manipur.
