"Let's make India's handloom diversity popular," the Prime Minister said.
Recalling the significance of August 7, Modi said the date marked the beginning of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, making it an important symbol of self-reliance and indigenous enterprise.
The Prime Minister urged people to give National Handloom Day the same public participation that Friendship Day enjoys every year.
Emphasising the livelihoods supported by the sector, Modi said every handloom purchase directly contributes to the welfare of economically weaker weaving families.
"This means every poor family who works in handloom, we have to celebrate," he said.

Appealing particularly to young people and social media users, Modi suggested using popular online trends to spread awareness about handloom products.
"With the handloom, u can also make GRWM video and tell everyone what u have to say and inspire people," he said.
The Prime Minister said promoting handloom was not only about preserving India's cultural heritage but also about strengthening rural livelihoods.
