Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor approved 23 heritage sites as protected monuments
The newly protected monuments encompass a wide cross-section of Ladakh's unique historical landscape, including ancient petroglyph fields, rock carvings, caves, gompas, forts, and historic palaces spread across the region. Among the key sites receiving statutory protection are the historic Tingmosgang Fort, Stongday Gonpa, Dechen Tsomo Khar, Sumoor Fort, and the ancient Saspol Caves.
The list also places significant emphasis on preserving rock art and ancient carvings, featuring prominent religious and historical landmarks such as the Shey Maitreya Buddha Rock Carving near Sindhu Ghat, Zong Chamba, Chamba Karpo, and the Rigsum Gonbo carvings at Diggar. Additionally, prehistoric petroglyph sites at Sharnos, Domkhar, Lehdo, Alchi, Murgi, and Mangmore in Kargil, along with the ancient rock inscriptions at Yourbaltak, have been brought under legal protection.
The notification marks a decisive step towards preserving critical civilisational landmarks that have been deteriorating and facing mounting threats from structural degradation, neglect, and encroachment. Under this statutory classification, the UT administration gains the legal authority to implement systematic conservation measures, regulate activities in surrounding areas that could endanger the monuments' structural integrity, and prevent unauthorised development near these historical sites.
LG Saxena said preserving Ladakh's ancient monasteries, forts, and rock art is essential to safeguarding the collective memory and cultural identity of its people. He added that the decision lays a strong institutional foundation for scientific conservation, systematic documentation, and sustainable management, while also supporting academic research and responsible cultural tourism across the Union Territory.
