Gujarat reservoirs 54% full after widespread rainfall

Gandhinagar: Widespread rainfall has pushed water storage in Gujarat's 207 reservoirs to 54% of capacity this year, compared with 61% on July 27 last year.

According to the Water Resources Department's report as of 8 am on Monday, the state's 207 reservoirs have recorded more than 54% of their total storage capacity. The report said 13 dams have reached 100% capacity, while 21 others have been placed on high alert.

The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam, regarded as the state's lifeline, currently holds 231,342 MCFT of water, or 69.25% of its total storage capacity. The dam is currently receiving an inflow of 3,232 cusecs.


Apart from the Narmada Dam, the state's other 206 major reservoirs together hold 253,336 MCFT of water, accounting for 45.41% of their total storage capacity. Region-wise, Central Gujarat's 17 reservoirs are storing more than 50% of their capacity, while Saurashtra's 141 reservoirs have over 47% storage. In South Gujarat, 13 reservoirs are at 45% capacity, while North Gujarat's 15 reservoirs hold more than 39%. Kutch's 20 reservoirs have the lowest storage, at around 25%.

According to the report, the Damanganga Dam in South Gujarat is recording the highest inflow at 27,412 cusecs, while its outflow exceeds 37,000 cusecs. The Ukai Reservoir is receiving an inflow of 11,689 cusecs. At present, nine reservoirs - Sardar Sarovar, Damanganga, Ukai, Karjan, Dhodadhroi, Wanakbori, Kadana, Keliya and Juj - are recording inflows ranging from 1,200 to 27,000 cusecs.
