Delhi Police registers 13 cases over NEET-UG protests at Jantar Mantar; govt orders arrest review

The Delhi government has directed the Delhi Police not to take any adverse legal action against individuals involved in the NEET (UG) paper leak protests held at Jantar Mantar, while ordering an expedited review of arrests and detentions made in connection with the demonstrations.

According to a press release issued by the Delhi government's Home Department on July 30, a total of 13 cases had been registered by the Delhi Police in connection with the protests related to alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination as of 6 pm on July 29.

The directions were issued after the government examined the circumstances surrounding the cases and considered the Supreme Court's order in Shailendra Mani Tripathi v. Union of India & Ors.

The Delhi government said no adverse legal action would be taken against protesters involved in the demonstrations.

"The protection, however, shall not extend to persons having criminal antecedents, as mandated in the order of Hon’ble Supreme Court mentioned above."

The government also directed authorities to undertake an urgent review of arrests and detentions, if any, made in these cases and ensure that the process of releasing eligible arrested persons is completed expeditiously.

"With regard to arrests/ detentions, if already made, in these cases, the process for reviewing the arrests and releasing the arrested persons will be undertaken expeditiously," the order stated.

The Delhi government further said it did not propose to initiate any additional adverse action against individuals involved in the protests and that the matter would be treated as closed without any future proceedings on the account.

The order was issued with the approval of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and was signed by Santosh D. Vaidya, IAS, Principal Secretary (Home), Government of NCT of Delhi.

The protests at Jantar Mantar were held over alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination process, with students and groups demanding action over concerns related to the conduct of the medical entrance examination.
