CJP warns 'streets of India will once again become the voice of its young' if Centre's July 25 assurances are broken

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday warned that it would resume its nationwide protest movement if Centre fails to honour its July 25 commitment to withdraw FIRs against protesters and ensure no participant in the student-led agitation faces punitive action.

In an "urgent" statement, CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the party's deadline for the government to fulfil the assurances expires on Tuesday and alleged that recent developments had cast doubt over whether those commitments would be implemented.

"Failing this, and as previously declared, the Cockroach Janta Party will have no option but to resume its nationwide protest to protect the students and young protesters who stood up not for themselves alone, but for the future of this nation. A government that breaks its word cannot expect the youth to remain silent. If the guarantees are dishonoured, the streets of India will once again become the voice of its young," the statement said.


The warning comes days after the nationwide Gen-Z protests led by CJP were called off on July 25 following formal talks between the outfit and Centre, and the subsequent resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The party had said it withdrew the agitation after receiving assurances that FIRs against peaceful protesters would be withdrawn and that participants would not be targeted.

CJP questions Supreme Court interim order

The CJP said an interim order passed by the Supreme Court in the batch of PILs relating to the protests had raised "extremely serious concerns", particularly a direction permitting governments to proceed with existing FIRs and investigations.

According to the party, the direction contradicts the government's July 25 assurance that FIRs would be withdrawn and that protesters would not face direct or indirect action for participating in the movement.

"It was on the strength of that solemn assurance, and in complete good faith, that the Cockroach Janta Party called off its nationwide protest," Das said.

The party claimed it had a "credible apprehension" that the Centre and BJP-ruled states could rely on the interim order to continue pursuing cases against protesters. It also questioned why the government's lawyers did not oppose the order despite being aware of the assurances extended to the CJP during negotiations, including discussions that continued until late Monday night, according to the statement.

Calling the order "wholly unacceptable", the party said a public assurance given to thousands of students could not be "diluted, undermined, or rendered meaningless through subsequent legal developments".

CJP demands transparency over July 25 assurances

Further, CJP urged the Centre and BJP/NDA-ruled state governments to place the terms of the July 25 assurances before the Supreme Court in the pending proceedings, arguing that the court should be informed of the commitments already made to protesters.

It also maintained that the interim order does not prevent governments from withdrawing FIRs or choosing not to pursue cases against peaceful protesters, citing Bihar and Assam as examples where such action had been taken. It said the executive retained the power to withdraw the cases and should not invoke the court's order as justification for departing from its commitments.

Reiterating its demands, the CJP called on the government to withdraw all FIRs, ensure that no protester is subjected to future punitive action and honour "both the letter and the spirit" of the assurances that led to the suspension of the nationwide agitation.

The party said it would resume protests if those commitments are not fulfilled by the expiry of Tuesday's deadline.
