Centre to hand over investigation of Khopanala explosion case in Nagaland to NIA

Guwahati: Centre has handed over investigation of Khopanala Explosion Case in Nagaland to National Investigation Agency (NIA).

On July 13, one Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others were injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded in Nagaland's Chumoukedima district.

Nagaland police in a statement stated the Government of Nagaland has been informed that the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, vide its communication dated July 27, 2026, has entrusted the investigation of the explosion case registered at Chümoukedima Police Station concerning the incident that occurred at Khopanala, Chümoukedima Village, on 13 July 2026, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The police said, “The Central Government taking the opinion that a scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency ACT, 2008, has been committed in the instant case, and in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 6(5) read with Section 8 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has directed the NIA to take over the investigation of the aforesaid case, having regard to the gravity of

the offence and its national security implications. Nagaland Government and National Police will be coordinating with NIA for the handing-over process as required by law”.
