Differences among ECs part of democratic deliberations, says BJP

New Delhi: BJP on Wednesday defended Election Commission of India, saying that ECI's functioning reflects a democratic setup.

Addressing the media, BJP spokesman Sambit Patra said reports about the three election commissioners sharing different views during official deliberations show that ECI is functioning in a democratic manner. He said the report negates the Opposition parties' allegation that the poll panel is dictatorial.

BJP's reaction came after a media report highlighted the differences in opinion among the ECs during the SIR process conducted by ECI in several states. "Media reports stating that ECs shared differing views in official deliberations reflect pure democracy. If there is no communication and exchange of views among ECs, Opposition parties would allege dictatorship and call them 'yes men' of the government," he said.

He quoted ECI's statements issued on the report. "The statement shows that ECI and all other constitutional bodies are functioning in a democratic manner and upholding democracy," he said.

"Opposition parties, who have been calling ECI and government dictatorial, have fallen into their own trap today," he added.
