Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border tension escalates with firing, stone pelting at Likabali

Guwahati: Tension continued to run high along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border following reports of firing and stone pelting.

A senior police officer said that in Dhemaji district, the police had to fire in the air to disperse protesters amid stone-pelting at the Likabali entry point. Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) continued an economic blockade that began on Wednesday in protest against the recent firing incident at Bodoti in Mingmang along the inter-state border that injured 11 people.

Officials said there was stone pelting at Likabali. Protestors said "three rounds were fired in the air to control the mob". TMPK, along with Mising Mimag Kebang and Takam Mising Mahila Kebang, has stopped vehicles travelling to and from Arunachal Pradesh.

Assam's border protection and development minister Atul Bora said: "This is an unfortunate incident. An economic blockade could further disrupt the situation. The door for discussions is open."
