Manipur CM Khemchand Singh chairs Unified Command security meet

Guwahati: In a significant move to assess and strengthen the State's security, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh chaired the Combined Headquarters (Unified Command) security meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Imphal.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed the prevailing law and order situation across the state. The meeting also discussed the security scenario along the National Highways of the State.

The high-level meeting was attended by Puneet Kumar Goel, Chief Secretary, Manipur; Kuldiep Singh, Advisor (Security) Government of Manipur, Mukesh Singh Director General of Police (DGP), Manipur, Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo ADGP (Intelligence), Major General Gaurav Sharma, IGAR (South), Major General Subhankar Basu, GOC 57 Mountain Division and Rajendra Narayan Dash, IG, CRPF (M&N Sector).


Senior representatives from central paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies, including the Joint Director of the SIB, Ministry of Home Affairs, the Deputy Inspector General of BSF, the Commandant of ITBP, and the Officer Commanding of SSB, Manipur were also present during the meeting.

Following the Unified Command meeting, the Chief Minister also chaired a high-level meeting with the same top security officials and representatives of transporters and discussed the resumption of the Imphal-Guwahati and Imphal-Dimapur bus services soon.
It may be mentioned that the resumption of Imphal-Guwahati and Imphal-Dimapur bus services was jointly declared by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Saitu Assembly Constituency MLA Haokholet Kipgen from Kangpokpi District Headquarter on August 8.

More than 260 people were killed, over 1,500 injured, and more than 60,000 displaced after ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities on May 3, 2023. The violence erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

There has been hardly any throughfare along the highways of the state. Ever since the violence broke out Kuki and Meitei have not visited each other’s areas. Kuki reside in hills while Meiteis reside in valleys. Besides most of the highways faced blockades and counter blockades.

In March 2025 the move to ensure free movement in the ethnic strife torn Manipur was met with resistance with state run Manipur State Transport Corporation (MSTC) buses being stopped and attacked by a group of people. One person had died and around 20 people were injured.
