A senior police officer said, "The target of the attack was the Longvi Company Operating Base (COB) of the 21 Assam Rifles at Longvi village. The attack took place at around 3:15 am on Friday. After a fierce gun battle, the militants fled into a dense forest." Sources said the attack was led by self-styled Colonel Makam Hachen of the NSCN (K-YA). The role of the anti-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom, or ULFA (Independent), has also not been ruled out in the incident.
Officials said a combing operation is underway in the area, while surveillance has been heightened along the inter-state border areas.
