Know Your Fund Manager | Gaurav Chopra, Fund Manager – Equity at Union AMC
With over a decade of experience in equity research, portfolio management and fund management, Union Mutual Fund's fund manager shares his career journey, investment philosophy and the principles that guide his approach to creating long-term wealt...

Let's start with your personal story
I was born and raised in a small town of Balotra, Rajasthan, and I hail from a business family. After finishing my schooling there, I moved to Mumbai for higher studies. I did my graduation from Mumbai and simultaneously cleared the Chartered Accountancy course from ICAI and the CFA Level III from CFA Institute.
My wife is a qualified Company Secretary, who looks after my two daughters, and due to her, I can concentrate on my work.
How did you land this job?
I was always passionate about analysing and learning about businesses, partly on the back of my upbringing. I began my career with Barclays handling accounts and taxation work for UHNI clients. After a short stint, I got an opportunity to work at a buy-side firm, i.e. Centrum PMS, where I spent nearly 5 years.
I landed my first equity job as a buy-side research analyst covering multiple sectors and taking part in private market deals. This helped me formulate my investment philosophy quite early in my career. Post this strong foundation, I joined Union Mutual Fund in 2020 and began working as a research analyst covering multiple sectors and was elevated to the fund manager role in 2023.
Which funds are you currently managing?
I am currently looking after 4 mainline schemes, namely Union Midcap Fund with an AUM of INR 1,846.92 crore, Union Innovation and Opportunities Fund with an AUM of INR 1,209.66 crore, Union Active Momentum Fund with an AUM of INR 502.90 crore and Union Children’s Fund with an AUM of INR 89.83 crore.

My investment philosophy has evolved over the last decade, working with multiple mentors, reading about successful investors as well as tracking markets myself. It began as a value style and later evolved to growth at a reasonable price. Over the years, I have also developed respect for different qualitative and quantitative approaches to investing.
I was fortunate to be allowed and encouraged at Union Asset Management to explore a quantitative investment style, which led to the launch of our Union Active Momentum Fund.
What excites you most about managing other people's money?
I believe this is one of the most exciting professions to be in. We get to meet the brightest leaders of different businesses and get to learn new things every day about different businesses and market set-up. Working with the best of India’s business minds is something that excites me.
Having said that, to see your investment rationale playing out and making money for your investors is the most satisfying part of my role.
